2 out of 5 stars Not as good as the others   July 24, 2008
I believe that everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I often enjoy books that do not seem to be very popular (before anyone is up in arms about my review!). Unfortunately I have to say that I am not part of the majority of the readers here. I do not think this novel is as good as The Other Boleyn Girl or The Queen's Fool. Whilst it is generally known that Kathryn Howard was not the most educated of people and was of course very young, Gregory makes her sound like a 5 year old. I appreciate it is a matter of interpretation, however, young women of the Tudor Age were generally a lot more mature, having been treated as adults at a very early age. Also, whilst not proved, it is generally believed that Jane Rochford played an active part in the downfall of her husband George Boleyn. Overall it is a passable read but very simply written - please return to the more 'adult' writing of The Other Boleyn Girl.

5 out of 5 stars A thoroughly enjoyable and engaging read   July 17, 2008
This is the first Philippa Gregory I read and I loved it. I enjoyed reading the story from the viewpoints of the three main characters, all three of them equally well drawn. Katherine Howard was the most engaging to me, throughout her tale she filled me with disbelief, disgust, amusement, scorn and finally, sympathy. The character of Anne of Cleves contrasted sharply with hers but her story was as interesting.

A book I thoroughly enjoyed and I flew through the pages as I was reading at every opportunity I got.

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as prequel but still very good   July 17, 2008
I loved The Other Boleyn Girl so much, I was worried Inheritance would be a let down but it's not. It's not as engaging or meaty as the first one but it is told in a different fashion - 3 or 4 different women who tell the story from different viewpoints and I liked that change. I enjoyed it and again her story telling and character development is great.

4 out of 5 stars superb!   July 5, 2008
I'm a recent newcomer to the work of Phillipa Gregory, having read The Other Boleyn Girl following it on with this. I haven't been disappointed with either book. This one was my favourite though - not least because it was written with 3 different narrative heads and it really made me reassess my opinions of the middle two of Henry's wives. Obviously, as wtith any work of historical fiction there will be a certain amount of artistic license used, but you can't help feeling in many ways Gregory is spot on with her characterisations of Katherine Howard and Anne of Cleves. I actually found myself really feeling for both of them and their situations, Anne of Cleves was always my favourite of the 6 wives anyway and this just made me like her more. Katherine Howard is portrayed as a vain young thing at first, but in many ways by the middle of the novel you feel some empathy for her as she is unable to be with the man she really wants to be with and has to go to bed with the King of England who Gregory refers to as 'rotting from the leg up'. Old, infirm, smelling foul and behaving even fouler. It's a tantalising glimpse into a time gone by when life was brutal and hard, and you could lose your life for merely thinking the wrong thing. A superb book, highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Intense Drama   June 23, 2008
In The Boleyn Inheritance Philippa Gregory once again returns to a period in history that she writes about so knowledgably. The court of Henry VIII, this time covering the period 1539 to 1542 with a postscript ending in 1547.
The story is narrated by the three protagonists Anne of Cleves, Katherine Howard and Jane Rochford concentrating on the lives of these young women trying to survive life at court during a time of political and religious uncertainty.
It is an intense time as these women though powerful live in fear of Henry and his favourite way of solving his problems `the gallows'
Written from the three different perspectives of these three very different women I found that I was once again enjoying historical facts interwoven with fiction in the style that Philippa Gregory does so well.
Even if you have not read the previous novels in the series this one still stands well alone. So whether you are new to her novels or a firm fan this intense drama should bring the historical period to life.
