good but boring July 23, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
With English not as my native language, but as reader of all of Robinson's books form first print, I think that, although it is still a pageturner and perfect beach reader, the characters start getting bored. The "always right" Arnold Morgan, the "I see everything in the World" Ramshawe, "mighty unfailable" Hunter, unfailable NSA ... What is the problem with good "other" men in the US of A..... And unfortunatly in the end, the only character ever discribed in to depth is out of the next book. Although I will certainly order this next book I hope Robinson comes with something new and a more surprising plot.
Fitting end July 18, 2008 I have read all of Patrick Robinsons books and although they can be predictable I have really enjoyed them all.
The last one is a fitting end and although you could probably guess the ending it is still a damn good yarn as my father would say!
Back to his absolute best July 7, 2008 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
Since reading Nimitz Class I have read all of Robinsons books, but somehow none of them quite lived up to it. The suspense, the tension, the guessing that accompanied that great work have steadily diminished from Patrick Robinsons writing.
If I could sum up this one in one word it would be Brilliant!!. After reading the synopsis I suspected that the author had not utilised his usual sources of advice on military matters and the acknowledgements confirm this - the result is not the usual detail-perfect work we have come to expect. Key capabilities of some countries is not correct but at the end of the day It`s fiction!! I couldnt put the book down until I had finished it. At the same time, the usual ensemble of characters is beginning to grow old and tired. As someone who has read each book in order of writing, it's disappointing to see established characters growing stale and dull because of a lack of organic growth and development.
If you're a first time reader of Patrick Robinson, try Nimitz Class as well. Long term readers, my advice would be to give this one a try it is very good and hope the author returns to consulting his usual sources for his next book.
