1 out of 5 stars Poor not usual Bagshawe   July 17, 2008
I have been a fan of Louise's books for the past 5 years and have read them all so was really looking forward to this book. I felt this book was so unrealistic, lacked substance, lacked depth and gave me the impression it had been written very quickly to make a quick buck with little thought. There were no clever twists or tunrs as her other books, it was sooo predictable I knew what the story would be from the first few pages. one of the worst books Ive read, would not have expected this from Bagshawe.

1 out of 5 stars Very poor effort   July 8, 2008
I have read a lot of Louise Bagshawe's books, and have no problem acknowledging that I do not read them for high-brow literary content. Her books are usually fun, escapist, glamourous and sexy. This latest effort falls short on almost all counts. The characters are so thinly-sketched that it is frequently difficult to remember who is who, they have no individuality and all come across so monstrously self-absorbed that it really is hard to have any empathy. The plot, such as it is, is paper-thin and the final denouement is anti-climatic. One of the author's themes seems to be "sexy women making it on their own," so I have to wonder why 3 of the characters are married off by the final page. A little less time spent pondering the characters wardrobes would have been fine with me also. If all the references to primrose silk dresses, Chanel suits and chestnut leather shoes were expunged, the book would be about 100 pages shorter.

2 out of 5 stars Bagshawe's a shadow of her former self   May 19, 2008
I am sorry to say that I was disappointed with this book. The storyline was weak and predictable - group of women who don't like each other much, unite against a common foe. The characters were also quite bland and uninteresting and the plot was quite boring. What happened to the grit, passion and intensity she displayed in all her earlier novels?? We all loved them. I think she needs to re-read all the books that made her want to become an author in the first place. She has lost her 'glitz' but I still have faith.

4 out of 5 stars Seychelles In the Pacific..don't think so!   May 17, 2008
Remembering my favourite Bagshawe novel, The Movie, I was looking forward to the chapters set in the Seychelles. They might as well have been set in Mallorca or Hawaii, though - no vivid description of the scenery or the sights, sounds and smells, just the same monotonous catalogue of designer labels. LB even got their location wrong! She has the plane heading off 'towards the Pacific' from London! The Seychelles are in the Indian Ocean. Sack the fact checker.

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre, not Bagshawes best   May 14, 2008

Took me a while to get into this one, none of the characters are particularly likeable, and there are more holes in the story than a big piece of holey cheese! That said, the storyline is fun, if a little unrealistic and predictable, an ok read if youve got nothing better. If youre thinking of buying, spend your money on Marian Keyes new one instead...This Charming Man, much better! Overall, I expect more from a seasoned writer like Ms Bagshawe....
