This book is essential for anyone involved in health care! January 22, 1999 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This book by Mike Drummond is a new second edition of what became the standard text for Health Economists and can be heartily recommended to anyone who is interested in this vitally important area of research. With the importance of evidence based medicine and evaluation of new pharmaceuticals or medical interventions the text is an essential first resource for clinicians, decision makers, economists and many others. Chapters cover the whole gamut of topics from 'Basic types of Economic Evaluation', through the methodology of measuring costs and benefits in terms of health improvements and quality of life. A useful last chapter acts as an 'economic evaluator's survival guide' and is full of practical tips,Updated and largely re-written, it acts not only as an introductory text for students, but as a resource for experienced health economists and decision makers. What is more, the book is easy to read and has such relevance it is hard to believe it is primarily an academic text. Used as a gateway to other work in the area this book will pay copious rewards in terms of time saved in wasteful searching for information. Mike Drummonds enviable expertise is supported by the co-authors Bernie O'Broem. Greg L. Stoddart and George W, Torrance, three people with unimpeachable credentials in scholarly research. I give you one piece of advice. I bought the paperback version of this book and now I regret it. Buy the hardbook which won't show the signs of the constant use I am sure you will make of it.
