4 out of 5 stars Decent networking guide   January 25, 2001

...But nothing fancy. If you already have a talent for communication and interpersonal relationships, there will not be too much for you here. Except maybe to use the book as a checklist...

Besides the author gets a little too hyper for me.

2 out of 5 stars The book has some content, but it is badly written   August 1, 1999

I don' think much of this book. It does have a number of useful tips and it covers more aspects of networking than Harvey Mackay's "Dig your well before you're thirsty". However, this book has several shortcomings, which I try to list in order of importance: 1) It is badly structured and badly written; its English is laden with unnecessary jargon. The author very often does not go straight to the point. Often, I had to go back and read the paragraph again to get it - a real waste of time. It's hard to believe the author was a teacher. 2) The author makes a heavy use of anecdotes, supposedly to bring out the point better through an example; many of them, however, are irrelevant. 3) Quotes should be illuminating and used sparingly. This book is full of meaningless quotes of the author's cronies, complete with job titles, company's name, resumes. It is far too obvious that the author uses the book as a networking and advertising vehicle. She really goes too far, making reading an irritating experience. I must say that I have my doubts the author is as savvy as she pretends to be; this mistake is really glaring. 4) Personally, I found her extensive use of yiddish terms irritating and unnecessary. I did not buy this book because I wanted to learn yiddish. Of course, some of it would have been interesting, but I had to consult the glossary at the end of the book too often to find it amusing. Overall, I can say that although the book has some content, retrieving it is a boring process because the author obviously lacks writing skills.

Susan Roane touches several aspects of networking, many of which will add a new perspective of how you may or may not continue to operate in the business world. This book will make you cognizant of everything from business card etiquette to the importance of a mentor. Great introduction for a novice networker; super review for a pro.
