The Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L USM Lens is weather-proof but the 16-35mm lens requires a UV Filter to complete the full protection for its glass. The Canon EF 17-40mm f/4.0 L USM Lens shares the 16-35mm's small lens element extension feature, and the 17-40mm's manual indicates that a filter completes the protection for the lens. The 16-35mm L lens at 16mm is very sharp, in the center even at wide aperture of f2.8, the fixed aperture in Canon EF 16-35mm L lens makes it possible to take photograph in low light even inside the church or room without using flash.
The internal focusing system in the EF 16-35mm L lens is good for using the polarizing filter as the front element does not rotates. The 16-35mm L lens is the best professional compact Zoom lens to use indoor and outdoor. But I have got Canon EOS 10D which I am using with, the 16mm changes approximately to 24mm in the digital camera which is the best wide-angle lens for group photography. And 35mm becomes normal lens in DSLR.
At closest-focusing-distance of .9' (.28m), the Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L USM Lens delivers its maximum magnification of .22x at 35mm. A 16mm shot at this distance delivers a dramatic perspective. Adding extension tubes to the equation shortens the closest focusing distance and delivers significant (macro) .86x and 1.09x maximum magnifications for 12mm and 25mm tubes respectively.
