Confused April 13, 2008 I am a big fan of Green Wing. Having purchased Series one and two and watched the Special on Channel 4, I recently decided to purchase the Special on DVD as it has come down considerably in price and was definitely not worth the original price for one episode. the Special was not as funny as the normal episodes but then it is a story coming to an end. I was disappointed with the 'extras' on this DVD especially as it didn't contain any of the hilarious 'out takes'! I was confused by some reviewers who mention the alternative ending. Unless I am imaging things, the alternative ending shown on this DVD is actually the one shown when this aired on Channel 4. The ending on this DVD would appear odd to anyone who hadn't seen the channel 4 version. I don't understand how they can bill it as an alternative ending. On the deleted scenes there are some terrible scenes where Caroline is kissing Guy before her wedding to Mac. I am glad these didn't make it in to the final cut as it makes you think that Caroline doesn't love Mac after all! Overall, I am glad I have purchased it as I now have the full collection but I am even more glad I didn't pay the original price!!
I haven't watched this since I bought it. December 3, 2007 I watched this on tv (and had already ordered the DVD). Then I had to watch it again because I felt I was being unfair to judge it entirely on one viewing. It is brilliantly funny as ever, but essentially the storyline is flawed. They spent so long playing around with who Caroline loved that by this point I thought if she doesn't know, then she doesn't really love either of them!! You lost all compassion and empathy for Caroline as it became apparent that there was no real turmoil in her head, just no feelings. They couldn't please everyone with the ending, but by doing what they did, they have pleased very few people. If I had to watch this again, I would only watch it with the alternative ending. But still, spend your money on something else instead - Spaced, Darkplace or The Boosh.
lacklustre ending July 28, 2007 2 out of 7 found this review helpful
series one was superb. Series 2 got off to a slow start but was pretty good. The much anticipated special kind of disappeared off the xmas schedules and wasn't promoted much at all -which should have told us something? There is a feeling of bittersweetness here and a pandering after a predictable happy ending for the love triangle. The demise of doctor statham and partner was truly sad with a few poignant moments. The finale lacked inventiveness and comedy. It needed more threshing out and one came away quite dissapointed that the writers couldn't have made the characters go out in better style.Green wing deserved a better ending than this. Only buy for completeness's sake.
The end is zzzzzzzz... February 13, 2007 10 out of 30 found this review helpful
I was hoping that this special would resurrect my former delight in Green Wing, as the excess of good will I held towards the show was well and truly annihilated by the abysmal second series. Fans of the show are divided over whether series 2 was any good or not, and I'm firmly of the belief it wasn't a patch on the innovative first series. That doesn't mean I don't have a sense of humour, or the show's just 'too surreal' for my taste, I just think everything since the first series has been a flat homage to a once great show. This special does nothing to persuade me otherwise. It lacks every element that made the show enjoyable, and this is no better displayed than in the cringeworthy funeral scene that opens the show. Not cringeworthy in a funny, Ricky Gervais doing a silly dance sort of way, but cringeworthy in its most traditional sense. Green Wing excelled when it was a comedy series set in the real world but with elements of fantasy. By the end of this wretched finale, reality has well and truly vanished, and we're watching the sort of drivel...sorry, 'fantasy', that smacks of plain laziness on behalf of the tired writing team. This really is a shame, as I had hoped for the show to go out 'on a high', but instead it just sort of tails off,a bit like this sentence. Don't waste your money, tape the repeat or watch it on 4 on Demand for a pound instead!
very good - but wanted more! January 21, 2007 21 out of 22 found this review helpful
There are so many obsessive Green Wing fans out there, with so many different wishes for the series, that this special could never have done right by everyone. As it turns out, it's a bittersweet, and funny episode, but it does feel like it could have done with a bit of pruning. The parts with the character of Martin Dear in particular feel like they were popped in to give the actor something to do. But Statham and Joanna's scenes were genius (behold the cows), and all the love-triangle stuff with Mac and Guy is particularly funny and touching. The ending is definitely odd, and might not please all, but the 'alternative' extended ending gives a touch of hope to caromac fans... overall, it's a quirky and mostly-satisfying way to say goodbye to a much-loved show.
