Amazon.co.uk Review Music & Lyrics is frothy and sweet, like the top of a perfect cappuccino shared a deux. Hugh Grant is a self-professed "happy has-been," playing his befuddled, adorable persona more spot-on than he has since Four Weddings and a Funeral. As Alex, former member of an '80s pop band who years later is playing at water parks and high school reunions, he's settled into a life of lesser expectations. Drew Barrymore, quietly radiant, is Sophie, the underachieving girl Friday who arrives to water--make that overwater--Alex's plants--and to explode him out of that comfy rut. If the plot's a bit farfetched, it matters not, since the two lead characters are so likable--and make such beautiful music together. Big bonus: the supportive role of Kristen Johnston as Rhonda, Sophie's older sis (and longtime Alex fan) whose hilarious performance threatens to steal the show whenever she's onscreen. (The owner of a chain of successful weight-loss centers, Rhonda tries to comfort a rattled Sophie: "Want to do some stress eating?") The film also marks the remarkable debut of Haley Bennett, who plays a pop star of Britney/Cristina proportions with deadpan sincerity radiating through her skimpy outfits and mega-extensions. As Alex and Sophie work on crafting musical magic, something else is taking hold. It's music to the ears of anyone needing a sweet romantic comedy that hits all the right notes. --A.T. Hurley

A bit of harmless fun April 23, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I remember the 80's so I must be old!! Anyway I didn't expect to enjoy this film but I did. OK, so the story isn't anything new and there aren't any great lessons to be learned from it but it is fun and Pop Goes My Heart is really catchy. Watch this with your friends, daughters etc have some popcorn and curl up on the sofa.
Great but not stupid at all comedy April 22, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Can watch again and again and still enjoy, Hugh Grant's hips' movement is unforgettable... good songs too.. like it very much
to be honest... i liked it! April 15, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
there's something about hugh grant that makes me hate to love him. He always seems to play the same parts but thats ok, i thought this was a sweet film, and drew barrymore plays the character of Sophie with gentle ease and confidence. Hugh Grant's 80's has-been persona is a comic and aged look at what happens after your time as a star. Very good and some nice tunes to throw in. Worth a look.
Stars going through the motions April 15, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Two reasonably well respected (if middle of the road and typecast) actors with a fairly bland script that is really going nowhere. You can see any plot development a mile off, and the only time you might want to consider this one is if you are on a first date. At least it will not harm your date and might put you in the mood.
Oh dear... March 28, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Wet is one way to sum up this film. That and predictable and boring. I don't usually mind chick flick type films - you're usually guaranteed something average...a Sunday afternoon type film. This is pretty bad - I wouldn't bother if I were you. If you want something of this genre you can do a lot better than to watch this...
