Quintessential Phillip Seymour Hoffman July 16, 2007 To have such an amazingly deep sense of drama but yet have such a shallow and flat story that does little more than put you through hell for 90 minutes is a shame...but Love Liza is not a bad movie. There is little in way of symbolism or lessons learned in this film, it merely tells of a man who tragically loses his wife to suicide and attempts to comment no further. If watching a movie that attempts to challenge your patience for the sadness is something you enjoy then Love Liza would be recommended, but the film simply lacks the meat that exists in so many films that are meant to entertain and/or to make you think.
On the upswing we get to see Phillip Seymour Hoffman in a feature role where he is free to do what he does better than anyone...whine, gripe and look utterly disoriented. He is a fantastic actor and this role sharpens and showcases his talents brilliantly. Kathy Bates is also very enjoyable as his mother in law, the mother of his late wife.
One thing is for sure, you'll be sad and wanting more from this film but part of that is intentional. It's a small movie in more ways than one but if you've enjoyed Phillip Seymour Hoffman in Boogie Nights or Happiness, this is his reprisal of those roles in some respects and we seem to get an even closer look as he takes it to another level here...that counts for something. Hoffman is a phenomenal actor.
moving and intriging November 11, 2005 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Love Liza is a powerful film. It centres around the suicide of Philip Seymour Hoffman's wife and how he copes without her. She leaves him a note but, unable to open it, he carries it around with him and stares at it in a mixed daze of grief and extreme anger, not wanting to understand why his wife killed herself. The performances in this film are amazing, and Hoffman relies on his physical presence to convey extremely difficult emotions. There isn't much dialogue, yet the film pulls this off brilliantly.A highly recommended film that makes your heart ache and your brain think.
Prepare yourself September 8, 2004 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
Alright, this film has labelled itself a comic tragedy, and I suppose I might agree with that. I would, however put a lot more emphasis on the word tragedy though. I watched this because I like Philip Seymour Hoffman, and despite being about a recently widowed man (his wife committed suicide) I believed the blurb on the box that this was a comedy. It really isn't. Sure there might be some laughs here and there, but I wasn't altogether certain whether I should have been laughing at the depiction of a man clearly having a nervous breakdown, even if it is a film.I'm not sure if I can say I enjoyed this film. It was an experience that's for certain, but I was left feeling horribly depressed and thinking 'is that the end then?'. It was undoubtedly one of the most depressing films I have ever seen but maybe I just didn't get it. I completely agree with the previous review that Philip Seymour Hoffman is really good, and if you like him then watch this for a taste of his more serious work. I couldn't say that this is an easy film to watch, for me anyway, and I wouldn't want to see it again. But don't let that put you off. I suggest that you watch this film, it is actually quite good, but prepare yourself for it is not lighthearted entertainment.
Simple & understated but excellent July 15, 2003 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
Some very VERY funny moments in this film that make you glad at each point that you sat down to watch - don't get me wrong though, it isn't just the moments that make this film great, Phillip Seymour Hoffman gives a 5 star performance throughout. Don't expect roller coaster ride of a script, but make yourself a cup of hot chocolate, nestle down and cruise through this wonderful movie that will definately leave you wanting more... and for those of you not a fan of love stories, don't worry as this really isn't one. Brilliant film, brilliant moments, beautifully directed, highly recommended.
