Amazon.co.uk Review Screenwriters rarely develop a distinctive voice that can be recognized from movie to movie, but the ornate imagination of Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation) has made him a unique and much-needed cinematic presence. In Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, a guy decides to have the memories of his ex-girlfriend erased after she's had him erased from her own memory--but midway through the procedure, he changes his mind and struggles to hang on to their experiences together. In other hands, the premise of memory-erasing would become a trashy science-fiction thriller; Kaufman, along with director Michel Gondry, spins this idea into a funny, sad, structurally complex, and simply enthralling love story that juggles morality, identity, and heartbreak with confident skill. The entire cast--Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Wilkinson, and more--give superb performances, carefully pitched so that cleverness never trumps feeling. A great movie. --Bret Fetzer

Amazing, Spectacular, Beautiful..Carrey's Finest Hour! July 15, 2008 Eternal Sunshine's complexities originate in a world where it is now possible to erase a portion of your life completely from a person's memory. In this case Joel Barrish (Jim Carrey) is suddenly surprised when his long-time girlfriend, Clementine (Kate Winslet) decides to have him and their fanatical relationship erased from her memory Judging from the front cover I bet some of you thought it was a comedy due to the face of Jim Carrey. Well, Its no secret that Jim Carrey is trying to let audiences know that he is more than just a goofy actor, and Eternal Sunshine makes that a reality. The Film is brilliantly intelligent, intensely written and emotionally mature. It has a great cast which includes the likes of - Elijah Wood, Kirsten Dunst, Tom Wilkinson and David Cross. It's a moving film with terrific performances all round - this is easily one of the best films of the year. The only time Eternal Sunshine seems to stutter is with its sudden ending, which isn't bad because it is such a huge plot twist, but because it is so sudden the ending seems to be a little too easy and unsatisfying. Everything said, this movie is certainly worth the view, but don't be surprised if you are a little upset, this film isn't for everyone.
Dissapointing and wierd. June 18, 2008 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
I really didn't enjoy this film at all. It's strange Jim Carey doing a serious film- although he can do good ones like '23'. I didn''t like any of the characters, and didn't like the storyline- which was boring and confusing. I didn't like seeing Kate Winslet with blue hair either! It was a really wierd film- which i suppose was its purpose- but i didn't like it at all. But most people i know who've seen it really like it, and looking from the reviews it shows i'm in the minority. ...mayb its cos people dont tend to rate movies they don't like ?!?! :)
Nothing will extract this spotless treat from your memory June 5, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
A stunningly well-written love story. A couple come to a bitter crossroad in their relationship and decide to erase the memory of each other. During the process we see the scattered moments they shared and, as the main character realises how much he needs these memories, we follow a game of cat and mouse between him and the technicians who will stop at nothing to wipe every last souvenir. The film is done so well that even with half-tanked deviant technicians lurking about we are never dragged from the central theme of the movie. The way that the camera is used to seamlessly show different dimensions of a scene while panning is breathtaking in its execution. On top of that the chemistry between Carrey and Winslet is right on the mark.

I'm glad i'm not the only one who didn't like this film although there still seems to be plently of people that did. I watched this in the cinema when it came out and left thinking what a waste of money!. I didnt like anything about it. The storyline was just confusing and i didnt like any of the characters. I do tend to find that films that are hyped up so much as disappointing and this proves my point!.
Intriguing and charming May 17, 2008 I kept thinking that Jim Carrey was Nate in Six Feet Under in this film. He looked just like him. This is a bold film, which had similarities to Sliding Doors, in its structure and impact. Kate Winslet, who married my school contemporary, Sam Mendes, is delightful. Kirsten Dunst is rather foxy, too.
It got a bit too complicated with all the flashbacks to childhood about two-thirds of the way through. The idea of erasing memories by getting rid of all the stuff you've got that reminds you of your painful experiences got me pondering.
I tend to be ruthless with possessions that outlive their purpose, and, having watched this film, maybe rather over-sensitive when it comes to dealing with past failures. This film gets you thinking about memories and what to do with them.
A good story with a super soundtrack.
