5 out of 5 stars In another league   July 18, 2007

This goes way beyond Bochco's earlier work and his formulaic attempt at a novel. It is simply a brilliant, moving, gripping, desperately needed window on unpleasant reality - and a great tragedy not to be continued.

One day this will be regarded as a classic.

4 out of 5 stars An informative show for people to see and to get an idea of what it's like   July 3, 2007

The strongest aspect of "Over There" is the way the various characters are developed. Their lives are fleshed out to the point that you feel like you know them and care about what happens to them. As a military wife I have an idea what's goes on. Some shows manage to alienate their audience with characters that are so annoying or unlikable it's impossible to care about them, but "Over There" accomplishes something rare: even when one of the characters does something unforgivably stupid, cruel or selfish, they remain sympathetic and keep you invested in what happens to them.

There have been complaints about the way the soldiers are depicted, but I think the show does a good job of being realistic while highlighting these soldiers' professionalism, self-sacrifice and constant struggle to do the best job they can in what are often difficult and dangerous no-win situations.

The producers also deserve a lot of credit for not sugarcoating the war or the soldiers' attitudes about the Iraqis. If anything they could do more to make clear what the US media has mostly overlooked: the horrific toll of war on the civilian population. Many people opposed this war on humanitarian grounds. Just as in Vietnam, just as in every war of the modern era, there are 10 innocent civilian casualties- mostly women, old people and children- for every armed insurgent or "terrorist" killed. War should always be a last resort, never an affirmative policy objective.

The war in Iraq took a bad situation and made it worse, compounding the error through ignorance, arrogance and incompetence. At a time when major news organizations have grown so timid they are only willing to show a sanitized, non-controversial version of the war for fear of offending those in power, we need more shows like "Over There", shows that are willing to tell the whole, unvarnished truth, uncolored by any agenda.

5 out of 5 stars TV at its best   May 11, 2007

As an ex (UK) Forces person I expected to sneer all the way through this as with most US series featuring soldiers. In fact, I was hooked by the end of the second episode.

Other writers have mentioned the rounding out of the characters but it is also the twists and turns that got me hooked. Most episodes end (sometimes even as the credits roll) with something that turns everything you think you know up to then upside down. Considering the war is still effectively raging, as has cost the US several thousand lives, I was also quite surprised at how sympathetically it depicts the Iraqi people.

Engaging, involving TV that makes you think afterwards. What more could you ask for?

5 out of 5 stars Over There Rules   February 26, 2007

Over there is by far the best tv series i have seen. it even beats 24, life on mars and prison break which are also outstanding. The acting isn't brilliant however they looked like real soldiers. Brilliant soundtrack which i think is better than the Band of brothers music. WARNING: it is very addictive as i watched it whenever i could and have seen it twice now.
Buy it now!"

5 out of 5 stars Here we go again   September 21, 2006

As with may great T.V shows that have come out of the US over the past 3 years, (The Handler, Jake 2.0, Tru Calling, I could go on), this show has been dropped after its first season. WHAT IS GOING ON?????? This is great T.V and everyone I have talked to says the same. How do these people work out what shows to stop?? Do they send out a survay and then drop the shows with the higest rating?

Sorry for the rant, its just that I get in to a T.V show and then they go an cancel it.. Oh well, never mind..

(oh yea, and I think this is one of the best shows to come out in a while so go and buy it now)..
