An Optician's Dream......... January 11, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I purchased 'The Leather Boys' on VHS many years ago, and the picture quality was DIABOLICAL....I remember watching it on TV some years back, and the picture quality was very good.....So I thought I'd treat myself to the DVD... expecting something special, but it is far WORSE than the old VHS!! One reviewer suggests that this is a BOOTLEG? That might be the case, but why are BOOTLEGS allowed to be sold by AMAZON, HMV, PLAY.COM etc? I think the company that released this film, must be in partnership with all the major High Street Optician's...As it is a plot to mess up peoples eyesight, so they need to spend good money on expensive glasses? Apart from the picture quality, this is a brilliant film, has lots going for it, and great character..When this film is released in the condition it deserves, then I will rate it 5 Stars. In the meantime, I am now looking for a very stupid person to sell my copy to...(anyone out there)?
Great Film - Terrible DVD January 2, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
A great kitchen sink social drama from the early sixties - but - this must be about the worst dvd transfer i have ever seen! Some scenes were so pixelated you can hardly make out the faces. The makers of this dvd should be ashamed to charge such a price for such a shoddy piece of work.
A great british film ruined!
This is a bootleg December 5, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is a bootleg. Orbit Media produce several bootleg DVD titles which Amazon sells for them. This is why they are not very good quality.
You should be allowed to give no stars, one star is too good.
Just don't bother October 8, 2007 1 out of 9 found this review helpful
Maybe you think this is a film about bikes along the lines of "The Wild Ones". Well it ain't!
A few views of the Ace as it was and some classic Brit bikes won't save you from the crushing depression you will suffer after watching this dreary, dreadful, dire tale.
Plot as follows: Bloke likes girl, marries girl, she's unfaithful, he stays with friend who happens to be gay, gay bloke persuades him to run away to sea together but at last moment non-gay bloke realises what's up and legs it. The end.
Combined with wooden ham acting, awful camerawork and mock working class accents you can understand why the British Film industry died a death. Because it made rubbish like this, that's why.
Oh, and Rita Tushingham is no great looker either. Why the guy married her I don't know.
Frustrating August 7, 2007 16 out of 16 found this review helpful
This is a minor gem of a kitchen sink drama, with some some great performances and some location sequences that will get nostalgia buffs very steamed up - Butlins in Bognor and the old Ace Café!
However, it's very badly served indeed by this release. To start with, it's a fairly duff print, which can't necessarily be helped, but is still annoying. Much more seriously, the box copy claims that the film is presented in widescreen, when in fact it's letterboxed 4:3 - which means that widescreen TV owners can choose between either watching a minuscule (around 1/3 size) picture floating in the middle of the screen, or zooming in, which degrades the image so badly as to render it pretty much unwatchable. The picture resolution is so low and the transfer so poor that on LCD screens many scenes simply dissolve into a riot of pixellation. Wait for it to turn up on TV instead.
