5 out of 5 stars Incroyable!   April 23, 2008

Marion Cotillard is quite simply incredible in this film. If you can put up with the subtitles then you must see it. It's not a happy film, it won't leave you full of joy, but it is fascinating and beautifully acted.
I cried like a baby at the end and am not ashamed to admit it!

3 out of 5 stars So disappointing   April 16, 2008

I love Edith Piaf's singing and really looked forward to this film.

The acting was, at times, brilliant. However there were too many scenes of Marion Cotillard with the fixed grin and empty eyes of a complete idiot.

The story was fragmented, it didnt come together for me at all. I was left wondering who Edith Piaf really was. The characters lacked depth.

It was also very slow and I became very annoyed with this screaming, self-indulgent, spoiled junky.

5 out of 5 stars A True Tribute to an Amazing Woman   March 24, 2008

My view echoes the vast majority of reviews on here; Cotillard is a revelation; what an achievement in acting; she really did deserve the oscar for best actress and then some, in fact she may have raised the standard! I could not help thinking "I wonder what Edith Piaf would think of this" - I think she would have been very impressed (in her own way of course).
I have not stopped talking about this since I saw it; I bought it for a present for my mother for Christmas last year, after hearing rumours how brilliant it was, and only saw it myself the other day; in the meantime of course, Marion Cotillard has won the oscar.
If you think you cannot watch a subtitled film, and this is the only thing that is putting you off, I urge you to take a chance and watch, as the film truly is a work of art in every sense.

3 out of 5 stars A Film Biography   March 24, 2008

I did watch this film from beginning to end, but I can't say it overwhelmed me. I kept expecting it to close, and then it went on to another bit of the story, and another, and another. I find Piaf a bit of a cliche, Je ne regrette rien is the sort of thing rather dim people pick for their Desert Island Disc.

It was a harrowing story, but apart from telling us the outlines of a hard life, I'm not sure it really told me anything profound or universal.

3 out of 5 stars Too real.   March 20, 2008

Somehow I found the amazingly brilliant performance by Marion Cotillard, coupled with the fabulous costume and whole atmosphere captured by this excellent film, too difficult to 'enjoy'. The whole thing was so very tragic and so very real that it is, without doubt, the most depressing film I have ever seen. If you want brilliance - this is it. If you are at all at a low ebb - this isn't!
