Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
Somewhere between the sharp satire of Election and the rich human comedy of You Can Count On Me lies Juno, a sardonic but ultimately compassionate story of a pregnant teenage girl who wants to give her baby up for adoption. Social misfit Juno (Ellen Page, Hard Candy, X-Men: The Last Stand) protects herself with a caustic wit, but when she gets pregnant by her friend Paulie (Michael Cera, Superbad), Juno finds herself unwilling to terminate the pregnancy. When she chooses a couple who place a classified ad looking to adopt, Juno gets drawn further into their lives than she anticipated.

But Juno is much more than its plot; the stylised dialogue (by screenwriter Diablo Cody) seems forced at first, but soon creates a richly textured world, greatly aided by superb performances by Page, Cera, Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman as the prospective parents, and J.K. Simmons (Spider-Man) and Allison Janney as Juno's father and stepmother. Director Jason Reitman (Thank You For Smoking) deftly keeps the movie from slipping into easy, shallow sarcasm or foundering in sentimentality. The result is smarter and funnier than you might expect from the subject matter, and warmer and more touching than you might expect from the cocky attitude. Page's performance is deceptively simple; she never asks the audience to love her, yet she effortlessly carries a movie in which she's in almost every scene. That's star power. -- Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com

4 out of 5 stars More enjoyable than I thought it would be...   July 19, 2008

..mostly due to Ellen Page's great kooky performance. It's a bit different from your average American teenage film and I think I prefer this side of America to the main-stream alternative. It's an unashamedly feel-good flick and one you can watch and enjoy with your girl friends. I'm not saying that men wouldn't like it, but lets just say, there's not much in the way of action, cars or nudity. If you're a man that likes an easy-to-watch film with a little bit of eccentricity to it,however, then maybe you'll enjoy this too.

1 out of 5 stars Boring Film   July 18, 2008

I watched Juno last week and was expecting it to be amazing, funnier than knocked up which i enjoyed but i was very dissapointed. It wasnt very funny, abit airy fairy with stupid singing and the characters were abit bland and didnt have much passion especially bleeker he was really dull in this film. When id finished watching it i was happy to turn it off, i would of turned it of sooner but my boyfriend actually enjoyed it so who knows, its alright i wouldnt watch it again but it was okay ive seen worse but then again ive seen alot better.

Id recommend waiting untill its on sky/TV and watching it for free.

2 out of 5 stars Made out its something good, which i didnt think it was.   July 14, 2008

Being good reviewed in the papers, me and my friends went to see this at the cinemas. I had read that it was amazing, really sad, funny & entertaining.

But having watching this film, i found it dull and boring, nothing like the reviews i had read about..

I would watch it if it was for nothing.. But i wouldnt pay for this film at all, i dont know what all the big fuss is about, because personally i found it a bad movie.

But i suppose everybody has their own opinions..

Hope this helps x

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not as great as it was made out to be   July 13, 2008
Alright, I hold my hands up - I saw the trailer and allowed myself to be swept up in the expectation of a bittersweet comedic masterpiece.

I'm not saying it was bad, as it plainly wasn't - all of the main cast acquitted themselves very well (even though Rainn Wilson is sorely underutilised), the script does have a lot of memorable quotes and zips along, and the plotline doesn't drag even when taking some unexpected twists and turns. Yet there was something that just didn't seem to satisfy, as well as the feeling that everything is just that little bit too contrived (a feeling aided by more of the commentary discussing the production design than the performances or the dialogue at several junctures).

The extras also don't help with this feeling, as a lot of these seem a little too self-congratulatory, especially the interviews with Jason Reitman and, especially, Diablo Cody (which takes me back to their commentary, where they congratulate each other at regular intervals). There's also a supposed gag take that doesn't seem remotely funny, more like Reitman needs to relax and stop bellowing at his actors.

I'd say the film is worth one viewing definitely, but the problem is I can't say it warrants a second or third and, frankly, you could've seen it at the cinema for a fraction of the DVD price.

Worth a watch, but don't expect a masterpiece because this film isn't one - albeit some of the performances are top notch. In other words, Juno gets paradoxical all too easily.

4 out of 5 stars Fresh, intelligent, and authentic   July 12, 2008

"Juno" is - I want to say excellent, but that doesn't really cover it.

"Juno" is the story of the 16-year-old junior Juno, who gets pregnant with Bleeker. Juno is very down to Earth about the pregnancy, and while she can't go through with an abortion, the fetus has fingernails, she decides to give the baby up for adoption. She finds the perfect couple to adopt her baby in the Pennysaver, and that's the very, very short of it.

"Juno" is a strong, dramatic movie with amazing acting performances. What I really liked, was the lack of pastel colored things. Most movies featuring a high school contain nymphs with perfect hair and way to much pastel colored clothes. "Juno" shows high school as it really is, a mismatch of different people, where Juno (and Bleeker) are not part of the in-crowd, nor do they wish to be that. Also, the dialogue is fresh and intelligent. It has words with more than two syllables and wordplay more advanced that a knock-knock joke.

What more can I say? Watch it and enjoy!!

Louise
