3 out of 5 stars Flashy but left me empty   June 27, 2008

I have mixed feelings about this film. Overall, style triumphs over substance but there are some genuinely moving and original cinematic moments. The director uses just about every visual trick in the book to hook the viewer in . Timelapse, talking fish, CGI explosions, surreal dream sequences - they're all present in this quirky tale of a loner turned hero. .However, the eye candy and heavy use of orchestrated music fail to cover up the cracks in the overall narrative and weak script. Christian Slater is initially credible as the office nerd, but ultimately he's too good looking to pull it off for the whole movie - not quite method enough to convince. The other cast members are weakly fleshed out and there's not one single likeable character in this movie. The movie is worth watching for the curiosity factor - it reminded me of a Michel Gondry/ Aronofsky film but with less substance. A good movie concept but slightly overblown for my tastes.

An excellent film, well-acted, good script and a superb performance by Christian Slater. An unusual film with plenty of surprises and a good story I would not be a quiet man in highly recommend this film!! Loudly -its great!!

4 out of 5 stars Slater's best in a long while   April 23, 2008

So good to see Christian Slater in a good role again. Frank Capello's film is funny and disturbing in equal measures. Probably not to everyones taste (particularly the ending), but the beauty of He Was A Quiet Man is it's continuous surprises, never following down the route the viewer is used to in a standard Hollywood flick. Great support from Elisha Cuthbert and William H Macy. This is a fine example of a film that didn't set out to tick all the boxes, but instead set out to tell an interesting story.
