3 out of 5 stars Great concert, but improvable sound...   May 23, 2008

Runrig again deliver a great, albeit routine concert with this DVD release, so there is no arguement about that. However, when selecting the "DTS" option, I really expected much more. Compared to their previous concert DVD release, Day Of Days back in 2004, the sound is vastly inferior in terms of ambience, bass and filigree. Thus, the wonderful concert sound is somehow reduced to a rather monotone and even tinny sound, especially when all the instruments are playing simultaneously. The rear boxes are almost only utilized for crowd cheer and the bass box is hardly used at all. So, at least in comparison to their own previous standard this edition pales somewhat, which is a shame for this kind of concert...

5 out of 5 stars Sheer genius!   May 13, 2008

For those who have never experienced a Runrig concert over the past 35 years, this DVD is as close as you'll get to sampling the adrenaline-pulsing atmosphere of one of Europe's top rock acts. Runrig may have released 13 studio albums, but it's always been their live performances that have captivated audiences around the world. This DVD captures the atmosphere of the Beat the Drum festival on the banks of Loch Ness last August on the wettest day in living memory. What could have been a washout was transformed into a Glastonbury-esque party, thanks to the energy of the performance by the headlining act.

From the opening electro-pipes intro to Year of the Flood to the closing strains of the recent UK Top 10 hit Loch Lomond, this DVD shows Runrig at their very best. Alternating between the blistering metal of tracks like Sona and the poignant classics like Hearts of Olden Glory and the acoustic Every River, Runrig prove once again how much they excel over many of their contemporaries when it comes to live performance. At 1hr 51mins, this DVD is excellent value for money and an excellent purchase both for the long term fan and an introduction for those unfortunate enough never to have seen the band before.

5 out of 5 stars Beat the Drum at Loch Ness   May 13, 2008

An amazing memento of an unforgettable day when 18,000 people stood in the mud and lashing rain for upwards of 10 hours to see Runrig on the shores of Loch Ness. The dvD captures it perfectly, though understandably focussing mainly on the newer songs (long standing fans will already have the older stuff they played on DVD already). Having been there in the mud and the glaur I'm amazed they managed to capture as much footage as they did - though I gather there were problems with a number of cameras and mics that were so waterlogged they couldn't use much of the material. This doesn't show on the final production which also uses footage and photos sent in by fans and has been intermixed cleverly with the 'official'footage so you really get a sense of being there in the crowd.

The only thing you could add for the authentic concert feel would be to stand in a bucket of cold mud and get someone to hose you down with ice cold water. Highly reccomended.
