On the verge of something wonderful- this is wonderful July 20, 2008 Having seen Darren Hayes live a few years ago, I knew this would be a treat, and well worth the few month's Ive had it on pre-order.
Darren's writing of these songs can be appreciated and humanised ten-fold when seeing them performed live. Such genius and honesty in a singer/songwriterss is few and far between.
The quality of Darren's voice always excels his already brilliant recorded versions when he is live. Just watch this DVD -it's perfect!
Perfect July 10, 2008 Easily Darren's most extraordinary show to date. More a genuine piece of theatre than just a concert, the show is a conceptual trip into Darren's childhood in an attempt to make a kind of peace with the past. Beautifully staged, with a set-list that is intelligent, builds in emotional power, and hits all the right spots without ever seeming to pander to anyone. And Darren sings - perectly - for about 2 hours, non stop. Never misses a note, never fails to connect. The man is some kind of god. And on top of that, it's just beautifully captured. Where most 'live shows' are heavily altered after the fact, or make changes for the camera at the expense of the audience, so that the end result looks more like a music video than a real show - here they've managed to perfectly capture what it was like to be there, up front. This is how all live DVDs should be made!
DVD could have been better......much better July 4, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I was fortunate enough to attend 2 of the shows on the UK leg of The Time Machine Tour and both nights were absolutely amazing. I'm a huge fan of Darren's but unfortunately, I don't think the DVD does the show justice. Whereas the Symphony hall and Royal Albert hall suited the show perfectly and there was a beautiful atmosphere in both crowds, the venue in Brisbane comes across as small, dark and pokey and the audience quiet. The camera shots are very annoying in parts. It shoots around from one close up angle to the next without giving the viewer the chance to take in the spectacular visionary side of the show. There are also no extras at all on the DVD. On a more positive note, Darren's performance and the bands is stella as always. His voice cuts through you like a knife on slower songs like 'words' and the acoustic 'i like the way' and sounds glorious in most of the tracks from 'delicate', looking and singing with genuine emotion in 'neverland' and 'casey' which are obviously both very personal. To sum up, I would recommend buying the DVD, but it's nowhere never as good as seeing it live.
A Emotional Ride with pure Talent!! July 2, 2008 I am blessed to have recieved this Dvd today as I brought the Limited Edition from Darren's Offical website. I was very looking forward to watching it especially when the trailer looks amazing. Sadly didn't get to see the concert live even though it came to my hometown.
First off, what a voice. This dvd is true evidence of his stunning ability to use his voice to echo emotion and feeling with strength which I know other artist's have not done yet (That I have seen or heard). When I hear the voice I have to stop everything to listen. The set looks basic at first but when you get into the concert the stage has some visual effects including green strobe lights which give a mystic feeling to his performance at the time. Darren even adds his own personal touch by talking to the audience about his dad and I sense when watching the Dvd that he is showing some real pure emotion not just in his vocal performance but in his eyes. The concert also mixes his solo career with some old and new but mainly new. I have yet to buy the latest 2cd album but so will after this as it has some amazing tracks that are shown as live performances. There is two main backing singers which come onto the stage and interact with darren which gives another twist to pop concerts which usually dont show the backing singers much. There is some choregraphy which is simple but affective. He talks to his audience through the concert like he is telling a story using song and effect as well as his telling.
I give this amazing Dvd 10/10. A new and different experience. So worth the money and time to watch. Great for a fan or a fan of pop or concerts.
His best yet! May 25, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Darren's tours have always been nights to remember and shown how talented he is but after seeing this show live we were quickly made to realise they were scratching under the surface of what Darren is really capable of!!!!! One clearly saw this was an artist performing who had set himself free from the chains of men in suits cutting back on a genius's music just because it doesn't fit in the top 40 mould. What we saw however would show up most of those 'artists'.
I would highly reconmend this DVD even to those who prefer his old stuff over his new stuff as you will re-discover Darren all over again, it erases all these perceptions preventing him from making a bigger name of himself and frankly it will blow you away. From his voice, to the stage set up to the re-workings of his Savage Garden tracks and own ones. This is where the music truly comes to life! Due to financial restrictions of Indie acts I doubt Darren will get to do a show of this scale again, you won't want to miss it! I would even pay the price of the DVD just for the entrance of the huge Origami Bird which was just visually stunning!
