Amazon.co.uk Review
The pressure was really on The Sarah Connor Chronicles right from the start. The first spin-off from the extraordinary Terminator franchise, it picks up after the events of the second film, and finds Lena Headey in the title role, who--along with her 15-year old son, John--sets about trying to save the world from the impending threat of Skynet. Along the way too, they encounter Summer Glau (whom there's a strong chance you'll know from Firefly), who steps into the shoes of Cameron, a bodyguard Terminator who helps fight off the many threats they face. She's some piece of work.

Very deliberately paced, and intricately woven to make sure it safely fits within the Terminator universe, The Sarah Connor Chronicles works a great deal better than you'd have any right to expect. Tightly scripted, and with a terrific performance by Headey in the central role, the show packs plenty of action and narrative into the nine episodes of its maiden season, and it certainly whets the appetite for more.

Perhaps the biggest compliment to be paid, though, is that The Sarah Connor Chronicles is a worthy companion and follow-up to the first two Terminator films, and one that genuinely expands and deepens the franchise. It'll be fascinating to see where the show goes next. --Jon Foster

5 out of 5 stars Check this out if you want to live!   June 29, 2008
Hi.

It's been a while since we've had any new Terminator adventures to enjoy. The most recent movie was Terminator 3:Rise of the machines, which was 7 years ago, so it was with much interest that we all sat down and watched this new series on Virgin Media, a ratings success for the channel. This narrative though does away with the timeline of T3 presenting a separate saga that follows on from the end of Terminator 2. Its roughly the end of the last millennium, and Sarah Connor is living in relative peace, looking after her son and enjoying a fresh relationship with a new man. The peace is plagued by her disturbing dreams as the day of prophesised judgement moves closer, and its no surprise when one of the terminators does suddenly appear, attempting to assassinate the teenage John Connor, lying low under an assumed name at a garden-variety American high school. A fellow female student Cameron (Firefly and Serenity's Summer Glau) rescues John from the attack, and promptly introduces herself to John and Sarah as a termination unit sent from the future to protect John from an up-and-coming relentless series of attacks from the evil computer network Skynet.

Time-hopping into the year 2008, Sarah resolves to wage a pre-emptive war on the fledgling Skynet to stop it from being created, stop machines from becoming self-aware, and therefore prevent the nuclear war from beginning.

This boxset comprises the 9 episodes which were shot for the first season, prior to the writer's strike from earlier this year which caused the production (and every other US TV show for that matter) to temporarily shut down. Considering the number of TV shows which were a casualty of that strike, it is to Fox TV's credit that they have commissioned a second season of the show. It's no surprise that a second season has been commissioned, the finale of the show (episode 9) attracted millions of viewers worldwide.

Despite the obvious constraints of a TV budget, production values are very good, the stories surprising and original given the subject matter: this being a Terminator TV show! The acting is very good, Lena Headey as Sarah Connor is especially well-cast. There are many talented guest stars who turn up along the way, and of course, we have to mention the gorgeous Summer Glau as the female terminator Cameron. The writers (who obviously wrapped things up quickly before the strike kicked in) also do a great job of giving the main villain terminator (a character called Cromartie) an actual personality that manages to arouse genuine interest in the story.

The series ends with a great cliff-hanger, leading the viewer with much to look forward to come season 2. Don't be too concerned that this series ignores the story as seen in Terminator 3, watch all the movies and then buy this boxset, its a great purchase. Its should certainly satisfy you long enough before the fourth Terminator movie comes out next year, starring Welsh chap Christian Bale taking the role of John Connor.

Check it out if you want to live!

This series demonstrates how much can be achieved by good actors and imaginative writers. The special effects are reasonable, without being outstanding, but the story is well composed and leaves you wondering just what will happen next. I really hope it gets a second season.

5 out of 5 stars I hope they'll be back.....   June 23, 2008

I'm a huge fan of all 3 Terminator films, yes even the 3rd! I don't know what it is about the movies that I love so much, could it be the jaw dropping action scenes? the gripping and intelligent storyline? the ground breaking special effects? Arnold Schwarzenegger? (yes he is one of my heroes)or maybe because the first came out when I was about 8 years old and I have grown up hoping and praying for more!! And how the producers have kept us waiting, with many years between each installment, I do sometimes wish they had churned the films out more quickly, if they had then they could have had the man himself Arnie in allot more of them. Then again maybe this is another charm to the franchise, that we have been made to wait and they have not been overproduced and therefore overkilled.....

So when I heard they were making a series I could not believe my luck! I was desperate for it to begin and when it did, I was gob smacked, never before has a TV series gripped me like this did. I really expected it to be a let down as so many spin off's are, but not this, in fact it takes the franchise to a whole new level. With the movies it always feels like you are only getting a snapshot of the overall picture, with the producers cramming in as much as they can into the 180 mins or so available. But with the series they have been able to show so much more of the daily lives of the characters and their constant fear of being tracked down by the machines...

The cast are superb, and I think I have fallen in love with my first terminator in the form of Summer Glau, if there was ever an excuse to watch TV then it is her. She is simply beautiful, but at the same time actually fills the boots of the big man with absolute ease, this was probably made easier by the 3rd film which introduced the idea of the terrifyingly sexy terminatrix. Summers feminine charm simply takes over and you can't help but want to see more of her whilst at the same time she seems to have a truly deadly and terrifying demeanor....awesome.

The special effects are again fantastic and are on a par with the movies, they really have taken their time to make it look as it should and not some cheap tacky spin off. The storyline too is wonderful and is not all action as you might expect, but gritty and intelligent drama.

I cannot wait for it to be released I will be first in the que!!!

5 out of 5 stars in the same league as the classic films   June 18, 2008

Terminator has to be one of my favourite franchises ever!!!(second to the alien franchise)and surprisingly this television series does the franchise justice.
i was amazed when i first saw this on VIRGIN1 with the stunts, effects, and the powerful acting from the well casted cast who provide emotion to the characters.
Lena Heady of course had the toughest job by stepping into an famous sci-fi icons shoes and i feel that she does very well,i'm sure Linda Hamilton is pleased.
already garnering more fans TSCC is an amazing series that has made a fantastic debut and does the films some justice as they are fantastic(yes i also loved the third installment)and so is this.
tv needs an action heroine and after being majorly dissappointed with bionic woman this brought the action to the small screen.
i'm definately going to buy this!!!

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic addition to the Terminator mythos   June 5, 2008

Obviously I can't comment on the DVD itself, as I am writing this 2 months before release. But having seen the entire series on Virgin 1, I would urge any Terminator fan who missed it to grab a copy as soon as you can.

This could have been some awful cash-in, or could have missed the point completely (like the ill-fated 'Flash Gordon' series). But it is actually superb. It is really obvious that the people behind it are fans themselves, respectful of the source material, and yet simply wanting to continue the story in a new direction.

All 3 of the main actors are excellent in their roles - I had absolutely no problem accepting Lana Headey as Sarah Connor - she does a great job of portraying someone with the weight of the world on her shoulders, who nevertheless knows that she can't afford to give up. Thomas Dekker is totally believable as John - trying to come to terms with his 'future hero' persona, whilst still a confused teenager at heart.

And Summer Glau - what can I say? She was fantastic in 'Firefly/Serenity', memorable in 'The 4400', and here she just excels herself. As the protector from the future, she makes a totally believable android - a bit like Arnie in T2, she is basically ruthless, with John having to teach her about compassion and what is acceptable. But better than that, you are never entirely sure whether you should trust her - apart from anything else, she DOESN'T always do what John asks her. And the writers keep on giving little hints that she may have been compromised in some way, which adds a real edge to the whole series.

The series is very exciting, with great action scenes, and the plot neatly intertwines an overall 'arc' with individual stories. Add to this occasional glimpses of the 'future' that they are trying to avoid, and you have something that you really can't afford to miss. The only real down-side is that they only made 9 episodes, because of the US writers' strike, and so it ends without actually resolving anything. But on the strength of what has been made so far, I would hope that a 2nd series would be a no-brainer. And if that is true, you'll want to have boned up on the first series well in advance!
