5 out of 5 stars Excellent value!   August 11, 2006

I opened the box with some trepidation as cost had been a major factor in choosing the binoculars, and these seemed to be good value which wouldn't sacrifice too much quality. Finally decided to go for this porro-prism optical design, with high-refraction BaK4 glass prisms. A good rubber housing affords a comfortable non-slip hold. There's a minimal + 0 - scale on the diopter, which serves as a rough rule-of-thumb, and the diopter lens itself was easy to adjust. The centre-focus ring has a satisfying firmness and a very smooth motion to it and the tripod mount will be a bonus. But what first struck me was the clarity and brightness of the optics, even in low-light conditions. The bino's gave startling sharpness to three red kites that flew overhead, and the moon appeared very crisp indeed. Pentax claim high-contrast images with minimal aberrations, producing clear, bright images without flare. Well, they're as good as their word. For such (comparitively) low expense the quality and performance are exceptional. This is serious value-for-money.
