lost data July 21, 2008 i bought this camera to film a friends wedding it was great not having to change tapes, and i bought a bigger battery which lasted all day. I also bought the sony vegas movie studio so that i could edit the wedding as a present for my friend, i have used premier elements before but thought i would use sonys product thinking it would run smoothly. I put the camera in the docking station and opened sony vegas i renamed some clips and imported clips into the media files and left some clips on the hard drive. i then thought i need to save the whole footage on a disc so that i didn't loose any. i used the one touch disc burn on the docking station, after doing this i looked back on the camera and all i can see is a symbol like a broken chain and clips that i didn't name have gone off the computer. I have looked through the manual and cannot find any info on this and seem to be left with only part of the wedding. I don't seem to be able to get any help on this as i'm not sure if i have lost the data or not. So although the camera has been great to use its no good if i don't have confidence at editing i feel that i can't use the camera again until i find out what has gone wrong. and i can't edit my friends wedding. There needs to be more back up support from sony.
Beware! June 28, 2008 22 out of 29 found this review helpful
This is a brillant camcorder that I was on the point of buying to cover a holiday in Peru. HOWEVER if you look on the Sony web site for the handbook, you will discover that use above 3000metres will destroy its hard drive!!! I have spoken to Sony UK Technical department about this and they not only confirmed the above but also said that switching to record on the memory stick will NOT get round it. As soon as you turn the camcorder on it will damage the hard drive if above 3000m. This was not mentioned in any sales literature or specifications, only the handbook -normally read after you've bought it!!

HDR-SR12E May 2, 2008 27 out of 27 found this review helpful
I updated my old Tape FUJI camera for the Sony SR12E unit and the performance of this camera is brillant. The operation is easy and not difficult to to get great results out of the box without having to go through the CD based manual. The camera is a little heavier than the current small camcorders but this one is packed with features with loads of options. There is a couple of problems however. If your hand is not too large it can be difficult to reach the top mounted "Photo" and "Zoom" buttons. Another excuse for the wife not to use it. Likewise the record button on the back can also be diffiecut to reach but I am getting used to it. The backlight compensation switch is activated using a very small button just under the front of the lens which takes a bit of finding when you are in the middle of shooting a scene. The optional 37mm ND filter and Polarising filter kits are not available as they have been "Discontinued" according the the local Sony shop. Strange for a "NEW" camera product.
Other than that the camera has with its 120GB hard disk storage got loads or capacity before having to upload into a computer for burning to DVD. The camera has a very simple to use editing function where you can split the recorded image at selectable points to get rid of unwanted sections and then discarding the parts you dont want. I have no idea as to the data managment of the hard drive when sections are deleted but hopefully Sony will have worked out the problem of de-fragmentation of the drive so that delted files dont use up recording capacity without having to clean up the drive from scratch. Only one last comment. If you can afford one GET one you wont be dissapointed.
magicgate memory stck April 19, 2008 19 out of 25 found this review helpful
I purchased a brilliant Sony HDR SR12 a few weeks ago ,and a Sony 4GB memory stick, which is on the adjacent site, only to find out that "MagicGate" is not compatible with the Sr12. You will only find this out on the downloaded manual ,and that is on Page 105 of the Maintenance and Precautions section...
