Been meaning to get a "proper" satnav for ages as I only have one on my Nokia N95. I looked at many reviews on Amazon and although there were the usual mix of good and bad reviews and the usual review from people who obviously do not know what they're doing, I decided to plump for the tomtom one v3, although I bought the Explore version that comes with the carry case.
Some gadgets are complicated to use and some are easy to use, this tomtom is in a category all on it's own: easypeasylemonsqueezy.
I turned the unit on and got a GPS signal within 20 seconds - I was inside too - I followed the simple on screen instructions and was planning a trip to the local supermarket within seconds. It was brilliant!
The whole thing is very intuitive and I defy anyone not to be able to use this without reading one word of an instruction manual.
An absolute must buy!
Support Saga July 11, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
The saga started in April when my Tomtom one refused to switch on. I phoned the support desk who asked me to send it in which I did. When it was returned, they stated the battery had been replaced. However, it still refused to switch on. It was returned to Tomtom for the second time and came back for the second (battery replaced) and guess what? It refused to switch on. I phoned tomtom support who informed it would have to be sent to the Netherlands, so I did. The whole unit was replaced and guess what? It refused to switch on!! It has now gone back to the Netherlands, it has been over 2 weeks since I shipped it and I have heard nothing from Tomtom confirming they have even received it. I have phoned numerous times with no resolution to my problem. I have also phoned numerous times and been told someone would phone me back but they never do.
In desperation I have now bought a Garmin!
Very disappointing - no signal/screen lockups etc. July 8, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm very disappointed with my TomTom ONE v3 - it is very difficult to use when:
1) it regularly takes 15-20 minutes to find a signal (tried this in several cars and standing outside) 2) the screen regularly "locks up" - not the best description, it's as if a phantom finger is permanently pressing something in another part of the screen so it won't accept my input. 3) the screen regularly zooms right out to the point where you can't see the detail of the route and, as I find the display is usually more accurate than the voice you can't work where you are going.
I have the same problem that other people have with it selecting strange routes, but I suspect that is going to happen to someone, somewhere with any SatNav unit.
Will not buy a TomTom again.
Warning - Cannot add extra maps!! July 7, 2008 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
The description for this product doesn't mention that it only has 512Mb of internal memory and cannot be upgraded.
This makes the product completely useless for anyone wishing to use it outside of the UK.
As soon as I opened the box and realised it didn't have a memory card slot, it went straight back in the box and I returned the device.

No criticism of Amazon. TomTom ? That's another matter. The unit works fine - until you connect to TomTom Home. The updates will render your unit an expensive paperweight. I can't recommend an alternative, but I emplore you to avoid this over-priced piece of junk. Steve
