4 out of 5 stars Are the extra fatures really worth it for me?   July 17, 2008

Use Tom Tom's extensively travelling the length and breadth of Britain weekly, and into Europe occasionally. After the wheel they are the next best thing man has invented.
When my 520 mount gave up charging the original Tom Tom I bought with any degree of success I had to rely on the V1 (think it was called that, the cheapest one anyway) that I had to buy when the 520 had to be sent back originally. So I had to look for a new unit and chose the 730T.
Here are some observations so far (not wishing to simply repeat what others have written).
The lovely size comes at the cost of battery life - switches off almost without warning (I recommend buying a double socket adaptor that Amazon sell, length of lead from socket to socket doubler a little too short but nevertheless worth it) - I would recommend one of the older and chunkier units if you intend going rambling etc.
An annoying feature is that the 730 does not list the exact destination by house number when you turn into the road like my faithful 520 did - I mainly have seven or eight drops in a day delivering pre-owned B&O gear and I key in the addresses prior to setting off. However when you turn into the road it doesn't list the house number which can be a bit of a time waste,a minor niggle for me but one that should be noted for multi-drop drivers considering this unit.
It is great having features like playing through your radio etc., but for me the speaker is perfectly adequate and there was minor feedback problems through the car radio anyway, don't use the text feature or any of the more advanced features so why then did I buy it at the extra cost?
The traffic feature - which does not work at all on my unit and hence it is being returned. Amazon offer excellent support, but take for example this itinerary. Wednesday 1600 start driving from Gatwick to Edinburgh, returning Thursday night. Friday in London all day, Saturday to Bellenaves, a few hundred miles South of Paris, returning Sunday evening. Not one traffic signal - annoyed - but it didn't seem to matter on any of these journeys, so makes me think what is the point of having it anyway! Then again, will re-order another because the one time it saves me being stuck in a huge traffic jam will be worth the money!
Tom Tom's are not perfect by any means, but they are still fantastic and 999/1000 do journeys without fuss, if you re-route or take a wrong turn. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because I haven't had any chance to evaluate the one feature I bought it for, but am sure it will be sorted in time. Still fantastic but not without these minor niggles.

1 out of 5 stars Looks OK - But not fit to be released   July 12, 2008

TomTom have some serious software problems with the 730T. Connecting via Bluetooth and using as a hands free car kit causes the TomTom to freeze - you can even get a "Unable to save setting: File access error" message. From then on it won't calculate a route and crashes / reboots.

TomTom technical support told me I had a faulty device (I was dubious), so I used Amazons fantastic (thanks Amazon) returns policy and a new 730T arrived 2 days later. After a few days of operation this one did exactly the same thing. This time I cleared the flash memory (search hard on the TomTom support site to find how to do this). It cleared the error - but then a few days later it happens again!

I could be wrong, BUT, I think it has a buffer overflow problem when storing SMS messages. Get one message too many and it corrupts memory and problems begin. Resetting whilst speaking to someone on the phone finally made my mind up to send it back and just buy a paperweight.

For reference I was using a Sony Ericsson W880i.

Thanks again to Amazon for their great returns policy. The shame of it all is that I quite liked the device although the user interface is a bit non-intuitive compared to my previous Garmin (Nuvi 250). BUT - my experience has been very poor and I won;t be visiting TomTom again.

4 out of 5 stars TomTom GO 730T   July 2, 2008

I had (and still have) a GO 700 but as the windscreen mount was on it's last legs (having been glued back together a few months ago) and the maps outdated I decided to upgrade to a 730T instead of buying a new mount and maps. It's a decision I don't regret especially as I paid less than 220 thanks to accumulated Amazon vouchers.

It is certainly superior to the GO 700 and the additional features - lane guidance, Q route, MP3 facility etc are all very useful. The only feature I haven't used yet is the RDS traffic which I believe can be quite patchy but this is not unique to TomTom. GPS reception is superb, locating my position almost instantly.

I only have one major criticism (hence the 4 stars)and that is the screen brightness, which as in all previous TomToms, is pretty pathetic considering the screen technology available these days. In bright sunshine the screen is very difficult or impossible to see. Another more minor fault is the short screen mount which on modern cars leaves the TomTom almost out of reach. I intend to get round this by purchasing dashboard mounting discs and this in fact may assist screen visibility as well by bringing the device further into the car. Despite these niggles I am very pleased with this bit of kit.

5 out of 5 stars My first ever sat nav   June 27, 2008

I bought this as I have just bought my first ever car and I am no good at map reading. I am not dissapointed. The touch screen is great and the voice recognition is a brilliant piece of kit.

It is remarkably easy to use and to upload map corrections and POIs which I have done a few times. There is something satisfying about uploading your own POIs!!! The voices are clear and the directions are said well in advance of you needing to execute them. I love the fact that music can be played via the FM transmitter on Tom Tom through my car radio and the music will stop when the next instruction is being read. I haven't had a problem with it crashing as the previous reviewer has had. It also has a desktop application so you san upload and download map corrections, new voices, images etc and be a part of the Tomtom community.
All in all i love it and I am so glad I paid the money for it instead of forking out for a cheap 60 model where the maps can't be updated.

4 out of 5 stars Great piece of work but....   June 23, 2008

Have updraded to the TT730t from my almost 3 yr old Navman and can feel the difference. Wont talk too much about the positives here as thats what prompted the 4-stars. Suffice to say that is all works really well, is simple to set up and use and is quite innovative. A superb gadget. On the "what could have been better?", as that's why people reads other's reviews:

* havent yet got the TMC antenna to work....and looks like I'm not the only one. A bit surprised that there arent more comments on that here, but if you look up forums on the internet, this is clearly a problem. I'm almost relieved to see that its not just my piece. Thus if traffic updates are not that important to you, go for the 730 and save a few quid.
* though set up and functions are easy, good to read the manuals and give yourself a few days of experimentation to get the most out of the TT.
* screen brightness not a problem, but direct glare does impact quality.
* 3-D graphics pretty good, but think the Navman was better.

All in all - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
