4 out of 5 stars continental plug problems!   June 26, 2008
product is very good but came supplied with "continental plug" and adaptor. continetal plug needed to be inserted into adaptor which then needed to be SCREWED up using a phillips screw driver. Its easy but you need to be expecting it and have a phillips screwdriver in the house. Needless to say there were no instructions that I could easily find that alerted me to this! Not a big problem at all but can take the less technically minded by surprise :)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent   May 20, 2008

This may be the best DVD player I have owned. I have not had it long enough to comment on its reliability but its functioning is superb. Images, without progressive scan employed, are excellent. The remote control is very well designed: it is compact, has 30 keys as compared to 47 on a Sharp model and is intuitive in use.

The instructions posted by another reviewer for rendering the player region free work and must be followed exactly. At first I thought something was missing but realised that the supplied batteries for the remote were low on power and unless I came close to the player the numbers on the keypad were not registering properly.

I have tried running DIVX files from a re-writable DVD. The picture quality was again excellent and indistinguishable from standard DVD; perhaps this is unsuprising now that compression technology is so good and if the DVD standard were set today DIVX would be the prefered file format. At first I made the mistake of popping in a re-writable DVD to which the DIVX files had been transferred using the Nero utility InCD. The contents of the disc were not recognised. However, the manual makes it clear that the disc must be burned as an ISO data disc; doing so works fine.

I note that it is possible to download software updates for the player and insert them using a CD-R. Presumably, such updates will include advances to DIVX as Phillips has a deal whereby this player supports DIVX files bought or rented from the DIVX company.

It is pleasing that Phillips and some other manufacturers have allowed the region setup codes to leak out. It is scandalous that the film industry attempted to restrict the world market. Not only are most Region 1 discs much cheaper than Region 3 but also the catalogue contains material, much of it of European origin, not available in Region 3 format. The fact that Region 1 discs have NTSC written on them is irrelevant. The files stored on the discs have the same picture information as those stored on Region 3 discs and this player enables the PAL system to work at full resolution.

I strongly recommend this player.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic, just what I needed a USB connection   May 7, 2008

Based on the reviews, I brought one of these for my mum & dad so I could easily give them .avi files to watch. It worked like a dream, so much so that I've brought 3 more for my sister, my neighbour and myself.
Can't recommend this highly enough, and can't fault Pixmania-UK.
I use it in conjunction with a "Buffalo RUF-C8G/U2 - 8GB USB 2.0 High Flash speed" which works perfectly and fast.

5 out of 5 stars Whoa! Plug'n'play right from the box.   April 18, 2008

I was a little concerned about going for something so cheap, but I needn't have worried! Plugged it in and it worked straight from the box. Played a disc I couldn't play on my previous player and played a region 1 disc without having to change any settings. Well pleased and I haven't even tried all the features yet. Excellent service from PixMania too.

This is a great DVD player which has performed well on all but the scratchiest discs. The USB function has also worked flawlessly. Very good machine for the price.
