 It Seems I Have Some Catching Up To Do... May 7, 2008

I bought my first Jam single in 1978 and stuck by PW and his music up to the splendid "Into Tomorrow" single way back when. However, I then came disillushioned and must admit that I became one of the dreaded "his solo stuff isn't as good as The Jam/Style Council" nightmares. That statement was spoken parrot fashion to anyone who mentioned the two words PAUL and WELLER to me in the same sentence. My argument always came unstuck however, if anyone DARED to ask me if I'd actually listened to anyone his solo material...of course we know the answer to that one, don't we?!
Last Summer I was listening yet again to "Our Favourite Shop" and I went through one of those periods where - and men will understand this - you suddenly for no apparent reason become obsessed with a particular artist again; I played the Council and The Jam constantly, read as much material as I could on Weller and generally annoyed my wife for a couple of months. It was after she said that she'd divorce me if she ever heard "The Dreams Of Children" again that I thought, well, maybe now that I'm a mature, easy kind of guy in my early 40's I should really give Weller's solo stuff a go, so I did. I started with this album, "Wild Wood". I never looked back.
Why on earth didn't I buy this stuff years ago? "Wild Wood" is a joy, beautiful songs beautifully played. "Sunflower" kicks the whole album off and right-away I recognised the guitar refrain. There were others I'd heard before, "The Weaver", for example, so not everything was new to me. "Wild Wood" is acoustic; is laid-back; is understated; is perfect for Summer. It's just a shame that I took 15 years to realise.

For me this has been Weller's greatest solo achievement (thus far), and although people rave about 'Stanley Road' this one will always mean more to me.
Ok the demos are not really worth repeated listens, but the BBC recordings and the previously unreleased tracks are great. This was Weller coming out of the darkness, still a little unsure but breathing fire again! Weller is always better when he has a point to prove, otherwise he gets comfortable and makes "The Modern World" or "Heliocentric".
Probably they should have included a third disc, e.g the "Live Wood" cd would have been the perfect accompaniment.

This deluxe edition of what i personally consider to be Wellers finest moment is a welcome reissue and one which should have been done before the previous deluxe Stanley Road.
Weller and band were straight off the road and into the studio , many of these numbers were already being played live and were well known to most fans. The opening Sunflower is full of passion Wellers voice almost screaming for lost love through the simple acoustic pastoral style of the blindingly fantastic Country to the power house of Has My Fire Really gone Out this album is one classic after another.
The sound is very live and the acoustic material intimate , Weller even gives a nod to some freaky hip hop dub fillers inbetween the tracks it is one hell of an album, full of passion and fire , Weller never sounding better. His touch is light the mood jubulant and it comes through in this sunlight tinged masterpiece.
Weller honed this summer feel perfectly with the next album if albums were seasons this was spring , next came the summer till the stripped live sound became a bleak Heavy Soul the autumn and winter in one.
The extras on offer here are truly rare indeed im a keen collector and have non of the demos on show here have appeared on bootlegs etc . The first listen is like an alternative version of the album . Most of the core songs are there and many are more arranged and complex than the finished article , if anything show Wellers less is more attitude with the band being slowly stripped away.
The B sides are nice to have in one package and the radio sessions are solo acoustic affairs and nice to hear again.
It would have been nice to have some visual material he did auditioned a couple of songs on Jools Holland at the time and did blistering versions of Sunflower and Has My fire really gone.
Also a big omission is the alternative jap release versions of Weaver and Pictures on the Wall from the Jap release , these were different takes to the uk release (even many hardcore collectors do not realise this so worth a buy if you can find it?)
Apart from this it a superb purchase and well worth a double (or in my case quadruple) dip.
Even if you don;t like Weller much this album will appeal ...buy it.
