A real return to form May 14, 2008 I recently bought the single and was amazed to hear the difference between this and 2004's efforts. The new Cure lineup had been stripped down (briefly) to just Smith, Gallup and Cooper, but the re-introduction of Porl Thompson adds a guitar sound frighteningly reminiscent of Wish. Lyrically simple, but musically beautiful, this is the best Cure single in 16 years, since Friday I'm In Love. Its b-side, NY Trip, follows in an upbeat style (again a little lyric-lite) which complements the predecessor. A fantastic single and not one to be missed. Freak Show comes out on the same date next month (13th June), but it will have to be some release to rival this one!
The Only One.. May 13, 2008 Wow, after a severely hit-and-miss last album and the departure of two members, no-one could expect The Cure to return and sound about 20 years younger.
Thankfully Robert has decided to co-mix this with someone other than Ross Robinson, and the result is the guitars sounding cleaner and Robert's voice being mixed into the instruments a lot more, rather than the scream bellowing over everything on the songs from the self titled release.
'The Only One' is a 4-minute-pop-epic in the vein of 'Friday I'm In Love' 'Just Like Heaven' etc. Some nice jangly guitar by Porl and as always an infectious bassline from Simon is complemented with Robert's playfully sexual lyrics.
One of the nicer features of the single is the introduction of a few keyboard parts here and there, which should please the ardent fan who missed them in the live show following Roger O'Donnell's departure. A few little piano phrases really add to the lively feel of this song, and remind the listener of 'Doing The Unstuck' from the 'Wish' album with it's million layers of guitar and keyboard.. As usual there are the chimes ala 'High' or 'Pictures of You' which give a nice warm vibe to this song.
If this is a sign of things to come, then on the 13th of each month we will be in for a big surprise. Next single is 'Freakshow' on June 13th, with the next two singles still unannounced. Hopefully 'A Boy I Never Knew' might be one of them, a really beautiful slow acoustic song showing the other side of the band, but 'The Perfect Boy' and 'Sleep When I'm Dead' recently played live suggest the pop-nature the band seems to have returned to. We will have to wait and see, eager as ever.
I Like May 13, 2008 A brilliant teaser for the album that will follow. The pop is back, the layered sound is back, the hypnotic beat is back. If the raw production of their last album didn't do it for you, i suspect things will be much better this time around if this single and in particular the B side are anything to judge by.
The only one is the sort of pop song Robert Smith can write in his sleep, but is great fun and sounds great. The B side is exciting because it didn't make the final album cut but is a great example of the cure at their best with so much happening in the song, a hypnotic beat and sonically it sounds quite superb. Cure fans will be happy.

Some might say this is Cure by the numbers - but that doesn't lessen it's brilliance. Its easily the most catchy song this year. And the more you listen to THE ONLY ONE, the more it infects you with its hook. I love, love I love what the Cure do to my ears.
