Amazon.co.uk Review It was surely only a matter of time until Tim Burton turned his dark attentions to the 19th century tale of Sweeney Todd, the cutthroat barber whose tales of murder and most grisly commerce on the streets of London became the stuff of an award winning 1979 musical. Here, a cast including longtime Burton collaborators Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter--plus Alan Rickman, Timothy Spall and Sasha Baron-Cohen--breathe new life into Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler's musical tale with a special gothic relish for the simmering horror within. Depp's accomplished, haunted "No Place Like London" sets the scene for what's to come, the nation's capital introduced as a moral abyss ("There's a hole in the world like a great black pit/And the vermin of the world inhabit it"), while Bonham-Carter brings Cockney energy and a squirt of sauce to the "The Worst Pies in London". A neat comic turn, meanwhile, comes courtesy of Baron-Cohen, who plays the role of Italian barber Adolfo Pierelli--inventor of a fraudulent anti-balding lotion--with humorous gusto ("The Contest"). --Louis Pattison

The only horror movie i like! Amazing film July 20, 2008 I hate horror films, its all blood gore and violence for no reason. But after seeing johnny depp licking rocks in pirates of the Caribbean. i think that he isnt as scarey as he could have been. But he still has a slight chill factor. Depp is an amazing actor and singer, i loved this film and could get the music from it out of my head after watching the film. They are the most catchiest songs on earth! I bought this soundtrack the second after seeing the film in an advanced screening. I was really shocked that people had rated this 1 out of 5! they obviously were too busy looking in the mirror or thinking about what they would look like in short shorts! I love musicals and i have just seen mama mia and i am going out to buy the soundtrack to that too tomorrow! Believe me, i know a good musical when i see one and this is my top fave film of all time!
10/10 for atmosphere March 1, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The soundtrack stands alone. I haven't seen the film. Especially good is "A Little Priest". Helena Bonham Carter is excellent. I agree with the reviewer who wrote "Tonight, Matthew, I'm going to be...." to describe Johnny Depp's voice especially on "No Place Like London". Some of it definitely has an Oliver Twist feel: Toby's "Pirelli's Miracle Elixir".
The booklet that accompanies the cd has many photos and hopefully I'll get to see the film this week as I don't want to wait for the DVD. Reading reviews by those who've already seen it, I think it will be much better first time round on the big screen.
addendum: Go and see the film, you wont be dissapointed. It's very London, very Dickensian with superb performances from Timothy Spall, Alan Rickman etc. 10/10 for atmosphere.
Wonderful film, brilliant soundtrack February 25, 2008 I fell in love with the music the first time I saw the film so knew straight away that I just had to buy the soundtrack. It's just too good for words and an absolute bonus that the "deluxe" version of the CD comes with a beautifully illustrated book that includes all the lyrics to the songs. Wholeheartedly recommended to anyone who enjoyed the film.
A Horror Musical... February 20, 2008 0 out of 18 found this review helpful
Gosh, did you watch another film than I did? Or maybe one has to listen to the soundtrack without watching the film... ? The film was brilliant, agreed, great costumes, great actors, great setting. But the music? Are you deaf? What is so great about Joanna and her yellow hair? For that seems to be 95% percent of the text. I would love to give a comment about the melody too, but unfortunately there was none. The film was supposed to be a success, Depp, Rickman, Bonham Carter and all directed by Tim Burton. And yes it is! ... as long as you turn it mute whenever the music begins to play...
Ab Fab February 9, 2008 If you saw the film and loved it... buy this soundtrack, from the opening title you are hooked, this soundtrack hits you where it should. It has to be one of the very best music scores i have ever heard, like the visual effects of Burtons masterpeice, Sondheim provides the sound, that to me has got to be The film of 2008, this soundtrack will not disapoint, 'Epiphany' is fantastic and Johnny Depp has a remarkable voice, this cd will take you back to a wondefull film and make you smile has soon has you hear it.
