Editorial Reviews:

From Amazon.com
In the late '80s the Pastels were bold purveyors of anorak pop, the shambling, chaotic love rock that was named for the heavy coats its followers wore in every weather. A decade later sees the band light years away from their former artlessness. Illumination is a fluid and spacious work, with offhand vocals and textured melodies that recall late-'60s Southern California folk rock. The Pastels have been a continual influence on the Glasgow, Scotland, music scene, and their passion for flute, percussion, and low-key organ can be detected in their protégés the Delgados and Belle & Sebastian. Rather than being fusty, nostalgic old-schoolers, the Pastels adapt their music to current moods and interests. Illumination takes a relaxed view of things, which makes the frantic pace of the music world slowly disappear. That is true magic. --Lois Maffeo

2 out of 5 stars Critical acceptance = musical blandness   July 24, 2008
Maybee bland is too hard on the Pastels but apart from a couple of standout tracks this album which received much critical praise pales in comparison with Up for a bit with... and sitting pretty

There's quite a difference between the Pastels and Liquid Liquid. The information on this product is rather mixed up with Pastels reviews and links but L.L. tracklisting etc. I wonder which album will arrive if I order it/them???

The first song didn't really suggest this would be a worthwhile purchase. Stephen Pastel's vocals are even more out of tune than my last singing in the shower effort. The Pavement like guitar solo, and off beat drums manage to save it. After this the Katrina Mitchell does most of the singing. She has a gorgeous voice that is not dissimilar to Isabell Campbell from Belle and Sebastian. Track 4 and 6 really lift my spirits. Track 8, Rough Riders is an amazing duet between Mitchell and Pastel (who suddenly becomes really good). Track 10, Leaving This Island is the stand out song. I never get bored of hearing it 2 years after I purchased the album. The playing is beautiful all of the way through and the lyrics intriging. The effect is album containing more emotion than all of those middle class angst albums I have heard recently.
This album is a must for fans of Belle and Sebastian and indie music of that ilk. It encouraged me to seek out more Pastels work, which is a bit different but also good.
