Seems that some are stuck in the 80's July 24, 2008 How to be constructive? It's difficult, because I've enjoyed the music of Steve & FM in the past, early FM for me was when he at his best, he/FM lost it with takin it to the streets and never regained it although I enjoyed Brass Monkeys as it was a move in a new direction. This album sounds like it could have been done by any average band in the 80's. This may seem harsh, but I expect & want Steve to do so much better than this but its the same ole same ole, I feel like someone that keeps going back expecting it to be different this time & it isn't, I guess its time for me to breakaway.
This is for the people that loved the 80's sound and just haven't been able to move on.
Excellent debut July 8, 2008 Based on the the previous review, I nearly didn't buy this but I'm glad I did as this is much better than I expected! Music's always a matter of taste so everyone has different expectations but based on the song "After the Fire" which I heard on a free rock magazine cover cd I looked forward to this. All I can say is that after one listen, I wanted to put it back on again and have now listened 3x today so that's got to say something. Not a weak album at all. Some very good songwriting by Anders Rydholm including some ballads and rockier numbers. Very melodic throughout. An excellent debut solo cd.
Poor By Steve Overland Standards June 12, 2008 To say Steve Overland has over the last few years been involved in 4 Albums with Shadowman and The Ladder, 3 of which are up there with best material of FM, I find it difficult to understand why this Album has been heralded as Steve Overlands debut Solo Album as it's so weak.
The Album is heavier than I expected but the songs are so weak and over produced often with Steve Overlands voice been almost in the back of what can only be said a very busy and often irratating keyboard and Guitar backing section.
Steve Overland is a class act and this is album is no doubt a blip as he has been so consistent of the his 20+ year career and probably peaked in my opinion on the last few albums mentioned above.
No doubt a return to form will be round the corner.
Sorry Steve...
