4 out of 5 stars Very good value for money and a great band   May 23, 2008

First things first, there are already two Joy Division compilations out there, Substance which personally i think omits too many essential JD tracks, and Permanent which i think is a great introduction to the band but scandalously leaves out "Digital".
Well this album has "Digital" and most of the songs a casual listener would want but it is worth noting that two key tracks "She's Lost Control" and the timeless classic "Love Will Tear Us Apart" appear on here in the less familar alternative versions which are longer but less catchy (to my ears at least!).
A big selling point is the extra cd containing two complete Peel Sessions, each of 4 tracks, plus 2 songs recorded for Something Else and an interview with Ian Curtis and Stephen Morris.
I own both this and Permanent and i think both are worthy of a place in anyone's cd collection, well anyone who likes genuinely alternative music.
I'd have given this 5 stars if it had the better known versions of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" and "She's Lost Control" on it.

3 out of 5 stars A wasted opportunity....   May 6, 2008

OK - let's get something out of the way. Joy Division where thee greatest post-punk bands ever. They released two of the best albums ever released by any band. The quality of their music is not under any doubt.

What is under some doubt is the format/point/track listing of this album. London Records have missed a trick here (or they just being cynical?). If it's a "Best of" then that is exactly what it should be. Not an excuse to flog us the Peel sessions (no matter how fine they are). But it isn't a "Best of". How can "Decades" not be included while the likes of "Incubation" is? Where are "The Eternal" and "Heart and Soul"? If fact there's just two tracks from the greatest album of all time?!!?? Less contentious, and more personal opinion, is the lack of much in the way of Still material, such as the very fine "The Only Mistake".

So we still haven't had a definitive "Best of Joy Division". I'm not going to lose any sleep over it, but London Records, shame on you, you have really missed an opportunity here.

3 out of 5 stars Don't bother with owning some songs, own all the albums   May 2, 2008

I think that best offs are really ideal for people who either kind of like a band or for someone that wants to try them out. The thing is, Joy Division are one of the best bands of all time. I could have the best of David Bowie, but I don't - I have all his albums and have enjoyed the music much more for it. There is no substitute for an album.

There is also a very natural flow to albums like Unknown Pleasures which you will simply miss out on with a best of. The inclusion of the Peel sessions is good, but realistically that's only for a true Joy Division fan and they will probably already have them.

My advice is to get Unknown Pleasures first if you're new to Joy Division - it is one of the most startlingly accomplished albums I have ever heard. From there, get Closer and if you're loving what you're hearing seek out such amazing tracks as Transmission, Atmosphere, Love Will Tear Us Apart and Dead Souls. Joy Division have an incredibly strong catalogue of songs. The fact that they kept some of these tracks/singles off their albums might hint that they weren't good enough, but the truth is that this band was so good that these singles matched if not superseced some of the album tracks!

I'll finish by adding that if you do love Joy Division and want to hear some bands that have similar styles, try out Magazine, Echo & The Bunnymen (particularly Heaven Up Here) and early The Cure.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe Substance Might Have Been A Better Reissue   April 25, 2008
but I for one reckon this CD has a place in anyone's collection, managing to serve as the perfect accompaniment to last year's reissues of UP, Closer and Still.

8 of the 14 tracks are digitally remastered versions of tracks found on Substance and not on the above 3 releases (including the single version of 'She's Lost Control' as opposed to the UP version), while Disc 2 (pointless interview aside) is worth the cost of this compilation alone. Sure, the likes of NDF, Shadowplay, Heart & Soul and 24 Hours are on the studio albums, but surely there's nothing wrong with having these tracks on more than one album, such is their quality.

A great introduction to newcomers and an excellent addition to existing fans alike. I agree Decades should have been on there though...

5 out of 5 stars The peel sessions make it great   April 22, 2008

If your new to Joy Division then this is a good intro, and with the peel sessions (alone cost double this 2cd comp) chucked in its good value for anyone who hasnt got them already. Thats why I got it!
