5 out of 5 stars MISSUNDERSTOOD   May 15, 2008
To start off, what the hell is everyone talking about, this is way better then "Hold you colour". The only reason people are knocking this album is becuase it doesnt have a "Slam" pt 2. In my opinion i think Pendulum have perfected the sound they were trying to achieve in "hold your colour". Secoundly this is drum and bass, just because it has guitars in it doesnt mean it breaks out of the DnB genre. It is however DnB with a bit of difference, just because it doesnt comply to DnB for dummies, doesnt mean its not DnB. Thank you

How many bands can invent not only their own sound, but an entirely new genre of music too? I rest my case.

5 out of 5 stars Give it a chance   May 14, 2008
As a big fan of pendulum i have to give it those guys from down under. They dont follow trends, they make them. This album is unique pieces of music. Yes they have changed but its still god damn amazing. Too many D&B artists sounds to similar, Pendulum have branched out and made something new, exciting and blood pumping.

Listen to granite and the tempest a few times and in no time u will be raving it up wherever ur listen 2 it.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant - my album of the year!   May 13, 2008
I wouldn't say I am a hardcore Drum 'n' Bass fan, and those who are will not enjoy this album. I am a rock fan, and that is why I was always drawn to Pendulum: the synthesised riffs of Slam and Blood Sugar; the diversity shown with Tarantula and Fasten Your Seatbelt; and of course the brilliant remix of The Prodigy's Voodoo People. With all of this, Pendulum's rock roots are clear. In fact, the members of Pendulum started out in a Metal band before venturing into DnB. This album goes back to those roots and delivers something only Pendulum could pull off.

In Silico's DnB elements are clear, with the fast drum beats and the catchy synthesisers, but Pendulum is much more than that. Having recently seen the band live in Southampton, I loved them even more. Every sound (including previous work from Hold Your Colour) is played live with drums, guitars, bass and live vocals. With the inclusion of an MC to hype up the audience (MC Ben The Verse, for those who are interested), this gig has certainly been one of the best I have ever been and was a mixture of a rock concert (complete with mosh pits) and a rave. And believe me that is a good thing. Below I have gone through each track on the album and given my views:

Showdown - going straight into a verse with rock-infused vocals, this track is a brilliant opening (they open their concerts with this song). The song then combines a brilliant beat with an even better guitar riff. Later on, the synth guitar comes out and reminds us of Pendulum's fantastically catchy riffs. 9/10

Different - this track has much mellower feel, with softer vocals, and a catchy slow guitar riff all held together a familiar DnB beat. Not a track that stands out on the album, but one that won't offend fans of the first album. 6/10

Propane Nightmares - the second single from the album is the band's highest charting single to date (#9 in the UK charts), and for a good reason. This track features probably the most vocals on the album and has a brilliant opening. When the apparent DnB elements come in with another of those catchy riffs that Pendulum is famous for, this track has brilliant verses and a great breakdown between with the chant of "bring it on home". 9/10

Visions - the song features electronically altered vocals reminiscent of Daft Punk, that gives the song a great futuristic feel, as well as great guitar elements throughout. 8/10

Midnight Runner - for this track, the band decides to drop the guitars and go back to a "real" drum and bass song. Not that track doesn't fit with the rest of the album, a fast drum beat, and two brilliant movements will make this track a favourite with fans not happy with the album. 7/10

The Other Side - this song has a brilliant synthesised-string opening and a wonderfully catchy vocals. Doesn't seem much like a DnB song, but somehow still sounds like a Pendulum song. A definite highlight of the album. 8/10

Mutiny - this song is my joint favourite of the album. Like previous songs, it has catchy vocals, brilliant synths throughout, and later in the song, an almost classic guitar breakdown. The second half of the song has a bass riff that sounds very reminiscent of Arctic Monkeys, that leads to possibly the best ending to any song on the album. 10/10

9000 Miles - again this track will be met with agreement for traditional DnB fans. Not one of my favourites, but like I said, sounds more like a song from Hold Your Colour than In Silico. 5/10

Granite - the first single from the album is described by Rob Swire (lead vocals, synth) as "a space war alien funk symphony from the year 3712, that somehow travelled back through time and landed in 2007". And he is absolutely right. With another fantastic synth riff, and sound effects that sound like they are taken straight from 1960's alien B-movies, this is one of the best songs on the album. 9/10

The Tempest - this song is the highlight of the album for me. The song is not very Pendulum at all for the first couple of minutes. When the guitars and heavy vocals kick in, it becomes very catchy. After you think the song has finished, at the five minute mark, the songs finishes the album with an anthemic ending. This part sounds like a house/dance track fused with a drum `n' bass beat, and just gets better and better. Brilliant. 10/10

Overall, people should review this album as it is, not for how different it is to their first album. This album appeals to both drum `n' bass and rock fans, and opens up a much wider audience. I can see Pendulum going further and further after this album, and it has already showed after the chart success of both singles. My album of 2008. If you love this album as much as I do, you need to see Pendulum's live set as soon as possible!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome   May 13, 2008
I knew before this album came out that it would receive many mixed reviews. The direction Pendulum has been taking on their live shows suggested a more rock influenced follow up to 'hold your colour', and that's what we have here. Don't listen to anyone who says it's bad because it's 'not drum 'n bass' or 'sell out' blah blah. If you don't like the style Pendulum have adopted, fair enough, but as someone who does, I can safely say that this album is pure amazing.
