Amazon.co.uk Review The Arista debut of Carlos Santana and band gives fans of the soulful guitar vet two albums in one, but it's a decidedly good-news, bad-news proposition. First, there's a fine collection of late-1990s-model Santana--tastefully tooled songs driven by Latin jazz and Afro-Cuban rhythms ("[Da Le] Taleo", "Africa Bamba", "Migra", "Primavera" and the emotionally charged instrumental "El Farol") that allow Carlos plenty of elbowroom for his passionate soloing. Then there's the collection of tracks featuring a lineup of de rigueur alternative and hip-hop stars, including Dave Matthews, Everlast, Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean and Eagle Eye Cherry. To their credit, Matthews ("Love of My Life") and Eagle Eye Cherry ("Wishing It Was") muster enough chemistry to make the fusion work. But the rest of the collaborations feel like an unnecessary stretch to reach out to a younger demographic that El Jefe has little trouble attracting on his own terms. --Jerry McCulley

Smooth... March 20, 2008 This was the first Santana album that I bought, and I wasn't disappointed. The songs "Smooth", "Put Your Lights On" and "Maria Maria" are among the best songs I've ever heard and for some reason make me feel much happier after I hear them! But seriously, this is a great album, and a brilliant place to start out when buying a bit of the ol' Carlos magic.
The Renaissance March 20, 2007 Apart from being a humanitarian and all round good egg Mr Santana has to be one of the most fluid, individual and recognisable guitar players ever. Having cut his teeth on the blues as a teenager his sound still resonates with the vibes of the great BB King, but with other influences found later such as Stevie Ray Vaughan. But this album is not so much about the blues. It is more an eclectic mix of latin/afro cuban driven traditional Santana sound on some songs and user friendly pop melodies on others. You're not likely to like every song, but I think most listeners should buy into at least some of the collaborations. To hear Carlos duelling with Clapton was massive, but the songs with Eagle Eye Cherry and Product G&B are an acquired taste. If you are a Santana purist and still appreciate the sound from the early seventies you might find the crossovers with modern hip hop and R&B acts distasteful but otherwise, buy this album and fill your boots with one of the best old school guitar players ever.
Smooth and brilliant June 22, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Santana, nuf said? Well actually, I recently bought this album and like other reviewers the guitar rifts are the best I've heard and love to listen to this album just for the that reason. My favourite track is Smooth with Rob Thomas (from Matchbox Twenty). This album is well worth investing in as it great to listen to and enjoy. As a future project, I would like to see Christina Aguilera to work with Santana as I think the combination would be brilliant.

Being a convert of Santana since the early 80's with a vinyl album by the name of Moonflower I was interested to learn that Santana were to be on "top of the pops". It was on this occasion that I first heard Smooth from their Supernatural album. It just blew me away. I bought the album (1st time), found after many hours invested listening whilst in my car thought it was one of the best albums I've ever bought. On seperation from my partner it was one of the things she insisted on breaking, ( I then bought it again now the 2nd time). Had it stolen recently from my house and therefore am committed to buying it again, ( third time lucky). From the entire album there is only one track that even now I find hard to enjoy, it is the one featuring Lauryn Hill. Personally,I believe that on this occasion she was just along for the ride and didn't rise to challenge. However the rest of the album is worth the investment and time involved to get aquainted with it. If you buy this album and listen without judging by previous Santana albums I believe you will enjoy it and get extreme value for money. I feel I can make no better recommendation. :))
