Amazon.co.uk Review There was a time when you couldn't step into a dance club without hearing at least part of this recording booming over the sound system. The often over- played hit, "Situation", was a bubbling cauldron of nasally synth noodlings, a whopping bass line, and drum machine wallops. Alison Moyet's looped laugh in the middle of the song ended up as a sample, over-used a thousand times over. Yazoo was an interesting blend of Moyet's smoky blues and jazz-tinged vocals with Vince Clarke's digital disco. Moyet's voice alone was instrument enough, and the melodies here perfectly showcased her incredible range. Upstairs easily moved between energetic dance floor exuberance ("Don't Go" and "Good-bye Seventies"), blues-inspired wailers ("Midnight") and icy electronic minimalism ("Winter Kills"). It was an explosion of a debut, touching upon 1980s gay disco, synth pop, and diva-ism in one fell swoop. The album closes with the overlooked "Didn't I Bring Your Love Down", an infectious barn burner with a call/response break that blows the roof off Eric's little techno-pop room. -- Steve Gdula

Complete and original line-up - at long last! June 14, 2008 Having listened several times to this remaster the sound is really good and it's great to have the original album tracklisting reissued for the first time on CD (no "Situation" replacing either "Tuesday" or the very abstract "I Before E"). The latter track may not show off Alison's vocals in any way (but it does involve a couple of the crew's mothers speaking some very strange dialogue in each channel) but it BELONGED on the album, however difficult it was when compared to the rest of the tracks.
The release itself therefore merits 5 stars, but it would have been 6 if they could've kept a couple of bonuses (like the 12" of "Don't Go" and maybe the US "Situation" as of the same period), rather than purely releasing these on the completists 4 disc box set. But the released format is the 'pure' one, so shouldn't really grumble. Love "Bring Your Love Down", "In My Room" and "Goodbye 70's" all over again - buy it!
one of the best albums from the early 80`s May 20, 2008 It is a must to listen to,see for yourself, DON`T BUY THE STUPID OVER PRICED CD`S 60 TO 165 (MENTAL), JUST WAIT FOR THE 2008 RE-ISSUE DES ( HUNPHREY )VINCE CLARKE IS A GENIUS AND SO IS ALISON
PURE SYNTH CLASSIC May 15, 2008 This album is outstanding from start to finish. Darker in mood than Vince Clarkes previous effort with Depeche Mode - 'Speak and Spell'. Alison Moyet's voice adds real depth to Vince's synth backdrops and noises creating a melting pot of pure aural pleasure. 'Upstairs at Eric's' contains the classic singles 'Only You', a timeless classic of synth balladry and 'Don't Go' a storming uptempo slice of of electro pop at it's best (the best 3 minutes of pop ever in my opinion). Other fantastic tracks are the uptempo 'Didn't I Bring Your Love Down', he heartfelt blues of 'Midnight', the meancholy which is 'Tuesday', the brilliant chorus free two verse structure that is 'Too Pieces', the full on electro bassline of 'Goodbye 70's', the fun of 'Bad Connection' and the amazing glass smashing of 'In My Room'.
I cannot state just how good this album is and highly recommend that you buy this! You won't be disappointed. If you like this you'll also love the darker follow up album which is 'You and Me Both'. 18 months together was never enough for Yazoo and i am ecstatic that these two talented individuals are back together again for 2008's reunion tour and Box Set 'In My Room'.
pure pop perfection! November 11, 2007 yes this album was released nearly 25 years ago! but it still sounds as pure as then! it was perfection..vinces great electro pop and alisons amazing vocals!
andy bell may have found a successful future for vince but alison has never delivered an album to compare to this ! she when a bit indie and blues and soul! now i love the girl but she has never sounded more passionate, desperate and pure! vince gave her the perfect backdrop for her vocals...and this was lost after the first solo album!
the huge singles "only you" "dont go" are here! but listen to this and you will see how someone can sell ther soul and find no audience!
alison has a truly amazing voice and vince gave her the perfect soundscape for a listener to enjoy it in alls it brilliance!
No I Before E! August 14, 2006 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
A great album, but sadly the CD doesn't contain the weird loops and noises of the sound collage I Before E Except After C which was on the original vinyl and is mad and dark. Check it out if you can...
