Amazon.co.uk Review Poor old Britney Spears hasn't exactly had a good time of it lately, what with her recent lackluster MTV performance and dubious appearances all over the tabloids. Blackout, her fifth studio album, is being touted as a bit of a comeback album, the title allegedly alluding to how she is "blacking out" all negative media coverage and focusing on getting back to form. Backed by an array of superstar beatmakers--Bloodshy & Avant, Pharrell Williams, T-Pain, Danja--Blackout presents a soundtrack that brims with trashy new-wave `nowness'. Tunes veer from the highly infectious "Freakshow" and "Toy Soldier" to the unconvincingly lascivious "Get Naked," "Ooh, Ooh Baby", and downright uninspiring ("Radar" and "Hot As Ice")--with some inroads into dirty disco ("Heaven on Earth") along the way. The tunes aren't bad, but the brittle, robotic soundtrack does start to feel dated and dull, especially when Britney's vocals are so intensely processed they feel equally starchy and disinterested. Comeback album it may be, but "Blackout" doesn't point towards any clear future for Britney--nor for pop music in general. --Danny McKenna

Dance/Pop Masterpiece!!! July 1, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Once you've put any personal feelings towards Britney aside, and actually listen to the music, you're almost certain to find that this album is a milestone in her career, being some of her finest work to date. Without the image of the messy music video, 'Gimme More', the lead single, presents itself as a catchy Pop anthem, with an infectious hook, and the same could be said for 'Piece of Me' among others. There is also a new sound created for Britney on this record, in the song 'Heaven on Earth.' It would certainly be a radio smash, and is one of my personal favourites throughout all of her back catologue. It's a shame that come people can't see past her personal life. However, it seems that this will no longer be an excuse in the future, as her life is getting back on track, and we can expect new material early 2009!
Simpley Fantastic June 30, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I didn't even like Britney Spears before the release of "Blackout"! But the Album is soooooo enjoyable! Each and every track makes you want to get up an dance! "Gimme More", "Piece of Me", "Break the Ice", "Freakshow", "Hot as Ice" are simply the best songs of the album! This is a must buy if you enjoy pop music. 5 Stars!!!!
BLACKOUT THE TIRESOME May 3, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
An amazing follow up to the brilliant 'IN THE ZONE' this album does not disapoint. Mentionings of her personal life are irrelevant. This is a classic 'get ready to go out' cd and worth every penny. From the slickly produced dark pop: 'Piece of me' to the brilliant 'Break the ice' this album is the perfect cd to get you into the clubbing mood.
I predict bigger and better things this year x
Britney Is Unstoppable! April 25, 2008 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
If one thing is certain is that Britney Spears is unstoppable, unpredictable, and definitely music savvy at a time in her life when things seem to be black. Yet despite the blackout she manages to hold her head up high producing a smashing sensational production!
Every single track is great with no fillers, no boring slow styles, or her past teenage pop sound. This is a grown up Britney that will most definitely appeal to all ages. The tigress got out of the cage and the "true" diva has now stepped out to show the world of fans, critics, and on-goers nothing can bring her down! The single status suits her much better!
HEAVEN ON EARTH is one of my top favorites for the totally mind blowing dance/electronica sounds with deep heavy "aggressive" attack vocals that change on ways not imaginable even whispering, "Your breath, your face, your hands, your tongue" describing how she falls hard for someone. GET NAKED (I Got A Plan) is a catchy, addictive, and club friendly song as the music spirals in electronica with a sexy guy totally hot sounding singing in the background sounding like nights at the club as you glance at the most outrageous person you'd like to escape with although quite naughty and dangerous.
Other Stand-out tracks and favorites like Gimme More, Piece Of Me, and Freakshow are quite good thus reinforcing a truly outstanding release totally mind blowing, unimagined, and plain hot as ice! She may be giving freak shows, she may be breaking the ice too much or getting naked but she knows people want a piece of her! As for love, she doesn't settle for a toy soldier as she needs a perfect lover to say ooh ooh baby, after all why should she be sad if she can feel like heaven on earth? Everybody get back the dance moods from the 80's, the new era, and you'll be singing gimme more over and over!
A Catchy, Infectious and Fun Album April 4, 2008 15 out of 21 found this review helpful
Britney Spears' life has been documented so much this year that it seems surprising that she even needs a new album to maintain her celebrity. However, perhaps she is simply sending the world a message to make them remember why she is famous to begin with. After all, she is one of the most successful female singers of all time, and this album reminds us of this. From the catchy single "Gimme More" to upcoming single "Piece of Me" and various other electro-pop tinged songs, this album is a welcome return to form. Fans of Britney Spears will enjoy her comeback and new fans will also like the catchiness of most of the songs and the high production values of the album. The album has input from Pharrell Williams, The Neptunes, T-Pain, Keri Hilson and others and is one of the best albums of the year.
