Thriller 25th Anniversary
Originally released in the US 25 years ago on November 30, 1982 by Epic Records, Thriller, Michael Jackson's sixth solo album and second with producer Quincy Jones, rocketed the former child-star and lead singer for the Jackson 5 into the stratosphere of international super-stardom. Introducing the "robot" and the "moonwalk" into the international lexicon of clubland dance moves via the pulsing sounds of Thriller, Michael Jackson revolutionised all aspects of mainstream pop culture--from radio airwaves to the newly emerging art form of music videos--becoming the world's most popular entertainer in the process. The original Thriller spent an astounding 80 consecutive weeks in the American Top 10, 37 of those at No. 1. Seven of the album's original nine tracks became Top 10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 while individual singles from Thriller reached No. 1 chart positions in the US, the UK, France, Italy, Australia, Denmark, Belgium, South Africa, Spain, Ireland, New Zealand, and Canada. Thriller made history as the first and only record to be America's top-selling album two years running (1983 and 1984). In February 1984, Michael Jackson held a record-breaking 12 Grammy nominations, going on to win eight, which stands as the record for most Grammy Awards to be won by anyone in a single year. Seven of Michael's Grammys that year were for Thriller: Album of the Year; Record of the Year ("Beat It"); Best Male Pop Vocal Performance ("Thriller"); Best Engineered Recording, Non-Classical (Thriller); Best Male Rock Vocal Performance ("Beat It"); Best Male R&B Vocal Performance ("Billie Jean"); Best R&B Song ("Billie Jean"). (Michael's eighth Grammy that year was in the Best Recording for Children--Single or Album, Musical or Spoken category for "E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial"). That same year, Michael Jackson took home eight American Music Awards and three MTV Video Music Awards. The following year, "The Making of Michael Jackson's Thriller" took home the Best Video Album trophy at the 27th Annual Grammy Awards.

great idea but could have given more April 13, 2008 As you know this is one of the greatest albums of all time, given a new lease of life - remastered - with new booklet and fantastic new versions of the songs.
Fergie joins Michael on Beat It which has been remixed and extra percusion and guitars on it. Bass lines and strings etc have been moved around and it has a new ending.
Billie jean is a remix by Kanye West. Not my favourite remix - I think Tony Morans was the best. the songs starts with the bridge and is given new beats and the track has re dubs of strings and taken new parts of the song and moved them back.
the girl is mine with Akon - again is given a new production and here Michael re does all the vocals and Paul's are removed. Again the song arrangement is moved around and given a new lease with a Rap on it as well. the single only has 2 mixes and this is a huge disappointment. this shows a good song last forever.
Wanna be startin somethin - the next single - with Akon singing on it with Michael has been given a new lease of life with new parts written for the song. Again parts of the original song have been moved around and others cut out. We start with a slow part and new introduction and you're a vegetable part has been taken out. new middle section and a great mix of the african part and the verse. I wished it was longer. fantastic.
PTY is not the song you think it is. It is the original version that was to be used on the thriller but was replaced. it is a different song. It shows itself on the special box set. Here it is remixed with new production and it is fantastic.
To me, we could have had a whole CD of remixes and new versions. how about the video emix of music to the thriller video without the gaps. it is the only song without any decent remixes apart from the section on the tony moran mega mix.
There are other remixes released of baby be mine and human nature and a remix of the lady of in my life would have been fantastic.
Can we expect the same of off the wall - as there are lots of remixes to songs on that album?
Great with the DVD of the videos and the Motown show which Michael sing "billie Jean" and that moonwalk.
Perfection with a new twist February 16, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
For those people who aren't familiar with Michael Jackson's Thriller, this is the best selling album of all time! 104 million copies sold in 25 years, thats 4.16 million albums sold every year since its release. It has also received a record 8 Grammy Awards!!
This album is a 25th anniversary edition. It has the new Zombie cover in foil.
The album itself contains all the original songs from the Thriller Album in Remastered form for improved sound. It then contains 5 remixes by the biggest artists today including Will I Am, Akon, Fergie, and Kanye West. These remixes give an updated sound and I believe they are the best songs you hear in todays music. Will I Am effort to update two classic songs (Girl is mine and P.Y.T.) have been executed with almost perfection and they sound new and fresh, which is what the music industry need these days. Akon's take of Wanna Be Starting Something, with his vocals and refreshed beat really is good. Fergie's Beat It and Kanye West's Billie Jean are also good but these songs will always sound cool. To improve these is just an impossible task, but it does make a good change. In addition to all of this it also contains a new exclusive song from Michael himself, "For All Time", this proves he still has the magic for music.
To put the icing and cherry on top of the gorgeous cake, this album also comes with a DVD of Michael's breathtaking music videos of Beat It, Billie Jean and Thriller in their full, uncut and remastered forms. In addition to all of this, this DVD also contains the Iconic and Legendary performance of Billie Jean at Motown 25.
Overall this is a worthy Re-Release of the most successful album of all time and it is worthy of everybody's music collection. If you weren't around when Thriller was originally released, then be a part of it and get this. If you were around when Thriller was released, then this is a worthy update for your collection.
Treat or trick? February 12, 2008 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
Thriller truly is one of the greatest gems in the history of funky/dance music. The figures speak for themselves: 104 million copies sold since its 1982 release, making "Thriller" the biggest selling album of all times! So, what about the additional audio material found on this Deluxe edition? We get one (good) unreleased song: "For All Time", and one (great) extended version of "Billy Jean". But things go terribly wrong when it comes to the addition of the 2008 versions of 4 classic tracks. Not only are these rap/urban 2008 duet versions not in harmony whatsoever with the funky style of the originals, but the so-called "duets" are not genuine since those are made of M.J's 1982 vintage vocals and other artists' vocals recorded in 2008! Not to mention that M.J. hasn't performed any new material on this Deluxe edition! You would think you're in for a treat, but you're definitely in for a trick! A few suggestions for the 30th Anniversary edition: add some of the 2001 Thriller Special Edition bonuses such as "Someone In The Dark", the "Billy Jean" home demo, and "Carousel", keep "For All Time" and the "Billy Jean" long version from the 25th anniversary edition, add the following never released on CD extended versions: "Wanna be startin' somethin'", "Human Nature" "PYT" (Pretty Young Thing), and why not "Say Say Say", as well as "Somebody's Watching Me" from the 1983-1984 era? Then complete the set with more demos, live versions of the Thriller songs, unreleased tracks, alternate versions and original mixes from the Thriller studio sessions and you get the Deluxe edition we should have been getting this time around! What a Deluxe edition should do is please the audience who owns the original album. This edition is trying too hard to appeal to new audiences and this is clearly a bad choice! I'll stick to my 2001 Special edition for now!
