Read all about it - The Paperboy delivers. . . !!! July 25, 2008 Fabulous fabulous album. My only criticism is that it could have been longer !! All these original songs are done in a retro style - one which sadly does not mean too much in the UK. For those music lovers who hark back to the blues/soul/R&B sounds of the 60s this album will be a breath of fresh air in amongst the normal dross that is all so often released. For those who do not hark bark to those times well I hope that this release will make you check out some of the good old Stax/Atlantic stuff that is currently being reissued. Eli Reed is a new(ish) name to these shores but, on the strength of this, he should be massive. He has a real soul voice unlike the anodyne stuff too often peddled as soul these days Hopefully he'll come over to the UK again soon (as I missed him due to my being on holiday this past week) and promote the album.
How refreshing July 25, 2008 I have to say, this was completely unexpected. I ordered this not knowing what to expect. The 60's soul style is fantastic. I loved it. It is smooth and does not try to be anything different. It just works. I hope there are many more albums where this came from.
Eli "Paperboy" Reed & The True Loves - Roll With You July 23, 2008 The first thought I had when I first heard this album was `how long ago was this made?' followed pretty quickly by surprise when I checked the notes and discovered it is a brand new release in 2008... This is the sound of 50's rock and roll as if we had completely missed out on the intervening decades with heavy influences from all the old Rock and Roll and Rhythm and Blues artists, the album physically looking like it would have been right at home in any 50's record shop, in every regard other than the fact it exists as a modern CD rather than 12" vinyl.
I can't really think of much else to say about the music other than `classic', brilliant songs backed up by the de rigeur female backing line, brass sections and double bass playing. Highlights for me include the brilliant swing of "Take my love with you", the rocking groove of "I'm gonna get you back" and "Won't give up without a fight" and "(doin' the) boom boom" which just belongs on the dancefloor of 50 years ago.
For someone only versed in modern music this album will be a pretty large step away from the usual soundwise, but is a showcase of how good the music form years ago can be, and what it sounds like with the bonus of modern recording techniques. If you fondly remember all the old guys, then this should be a fantastic way to catch up and hear something completely new, yet in a familiar sound.
Paperboy Delivers July 22, 2008 Whilst the sleeve may put you in mind of a derivative rockabilly artist Eli Reed is a very able singer songwriter of another derivative stripe.
The sound is very retro and beautifully produced, the songs themselves are decent but no better and Eli sings well, a really good soul or blues singer. The closest sound to this is Stax soul/blues with the punchy horn section familiar to fans of the Blues Brothers or the Commitments. I really like this album as there is really very little to dislike. It's a real easy listen. And not in a Val Doonican way. It just feels very familiar and that indeed is also its downfall. The material is so blatantly derivative that although very good will never become a classic, even the lyrics sound a little cliched.
A nice diversion no question but if you want a real classic of this Genre perhaps you would be better served buying the peerless Otis Blue.
Very good but not great.
Great Voice and a Great Influence.. July 20, 2008 The music Industry at the moment is in a state of transition. The days of Boybands and talent-show winners is coming to an end. Everyone is looking for the next big thing in music and in doing so we have the likes of Duffy and Amy Winehouse raiding the past for influence. So it is with Eli Reed...whereas Duffy and Winehouse have looked to 60's Motown and Blues, Reed's influences are firmly with American Soul, particularly the Stax and Atlantic label. Think of the Commitments a few years back and you will know what to expect from this album. It is Reed's 2nd album, and shows him in good form. There's no denying his voice is good and his singing is heartfelt, like all Soul singers must be. The songs are original too...but whereas the voice is up to scratch, the songwriting at the moment is in it's early stages. That's not to say they're not worth a listen- indeed I have played this album a few times now, and it is very enjoyable- but Reed needs the strong material that his voice commands, and there's no classic songs here. In this age of single downloads, the role of an album is becoming increasingly one of promoting a live act. That's where this album succeeds. Where Reed sounds great on a recording, I can't help feeling he would be brilliant in a live setting. Each of these songs would probably take on a life of it's own in the right setting, given an energetic performance. . I hope Reed gets the breakthrough Hit record that he deserves and in the meantime I will look out for any live appearances he may make in the UK. Buy this album if you like classic soul ...you could do much worse !
