Amazon.co.uk Review Like most of R&B's finest talents (D'Angelo, Lynden David Hall, Erykah Badu, Chico Debarge, The Roots and Macy Gray--before she became a combined living legend and household name), Jill Scott doesn't fit neatly into any marketing game plan. The exquisitely chilled sounds of her aptly titled debut, Who Is Jill Scott?--one part jazzy-funk mixed with two parts slow and sexy hip-hop-inspired soul--defy tidy pigeonholes. Made from the same mould as Erykah Badu and Meshell Ndegéocello, Scott is blessed with a voice that flits between intimate spoken word love poetry and stirring melodies. Like D'Angelo, her grooves are a subtle blend of funked soul and sensual jazz. And, like all of the above, Scott sounds as if she means every sexually-charged word as she demands to know how her lover wants it on "It's Love", warns off the other woman with "Getting in the Way" and suggests an intimate encounter with "Long Walk". In fact, all that Who Is Jill Scott? lacks is the standout single that would make her the household name that she so deserves to be. --Dan Gennoe

Who Is Jill Scott? October 5, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Jill's first album and it came as a breath of fresh air. Not only has Jill Scott one of the most soulful voices i've heard in years but she has integrity and spirit. Her studio work is excellent and Jill Scott live is magical and well worth a try if you like this. There are so many stand out tracks on this CD it is hard to pick out one for special mention. All I can say is buy this album and enjoy the poetry of her lyrics and feel the soul in her vocals. Amazing artist!
Answer to C. Thorpe ... September 21, 2006 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
C. Thorpe Yess this is the album you want to and the track you mentioned is "Getting in the way". It is a very heavy smoky album, reminds me of Erykah Badu... Sound of the Deep South. Highly recommend it.

Gill Scott the super! August 22, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I love this woman. Her lyrics are moving, funny and poetic and her sound makes me swoon. This album is amazing and there isn't a bad track. Everyone must see her live, she is electrifying and the audience, both male and female are unable to take their eyes off her.
Who Is Jill Scott? Words & Sounds Vol.1 September 11, 2005 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
In a year where Neo-Soul was becoming increasingly popular, with favourites Erykah Badu and D'Angelo making impressive comebacks, newcomers Macy Gray, Lucy Pearl and Angie Stone making waves with their fresh sounds, Philadelphia native Jill Scott stood out with her unique sound. "Who Is Jill Scott? Words & Sounds Vol.1," the complete title of Scott's debut, is one of the best albums of the new millennium. Released summer 2000, "Who Is..." was a gradual seller. The album peaked at only #17 in the USA, but went on to shift 2 million copies. The biggest single from the album, 'A Long Walk' was a hit a year later.Scott's music is pure & genuine soul music. Scott has a wonderful technique of mixing subtle spoken word with breathtaking vocals over sweet instrumentation. Scott was a poet before embarking on a music career, and this is clearly evident on the songs of this remarkable debut - Scott's lyrics are perfection! A personal favourite of mine is 'The Way' - this is Jill Scott at her most seductive, the music is heavenly and Scott's sensual vocals make this track a classic. Another highlight is the poetic 'A Long Walk' - a beautiful song, Scott's vocals astound me on this, she sings with so much passion. 'Gettin' in the Way' - the first single, is a song that oozes attitude but the music it alone enough to melt butter. 'Who Is Jill Scott?' is an essential album for soul lovers, but anyone can appreciate this record, Scott's spirit is so vivid on record, it is definitely something that must be heard. In 2001, Ms. Scott released "Experience 826+" an impressive live album of her best-selling debut album, along with a second disc of new material. In 2004, her sophomore album was finally released; the superb "Beautifully Human."
