The Nikon 70-300mm G lens is lightweight and has broad zoom range. Between 70-300 it's soft at large aperture - and this can be used to create shallow depth of field for the floral pictures or portraits. For getting higher depth of field one need to use smaller apertures - preferably smaller than F/11.
The Nikon 70-300mm G lens has plastic mount bayonet instead of metal (as in ED) - I take it as an advantage for the light weight of the lens. Also thanks to Nikon for includind the lens hood with this lens.
As for all G lens this lens does not have an aperture ring. You need to control the aperture from the camera body. Please check the compatible Nikon cameras which can use this lens.
Performance - I tested on Nikon N80 - produces quite good result and excellent floral macros with blurred backgrounds. Focusing is fast and very sharp.
My conclusion is - if you are looking for a light-weight telephoto zoom lens at low price this is the best buy. I will recommend this lens strongly for learners and amateur photographers. However, for professionals who can afford to pay more can look for ED and VR lens. |
