A doddle to use! July 15, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Even the instructions for getting the thing out off the box are well thought out.Assembly is straight forward. It seems to be well built,it is built in Germany(it says so on the box).Strange that their labour costs don`t stop them from manufacturing in their home country! The stop/start buttons could be bigger.Mine came with the bag. This does not fit very well on the two "hooks" on the machine,so certainly don`t buy one.Much better to use/buy a plastic storage box.Noise.Well the figures stated on Amazon are different to that stated on the box. However, its quieter than my cement mixer which is rated at 85db!Even when chomping its way through 3-4cm "branches".So noise ,don`t worry about it.How good does it do the job? Well it eats it way through anything that goes through the slot. However,I`m pleasantly surprised at how well it chops up leafy, thin twiggy material.Every now and then it needs a woody branch to clean the cutting drum.Is it worth the money? Well it doesn`t require a huge leap of imagination to realise that something spinning at 1000`s RPM is noisey. This turns a leisurely 40 RPM, does a very good job, you can carry on a conversation at the same time and once you get the branch started ,it feeds itself. What more do want? Robert Bosch,I want a discount on a hedge trimmer I will probably buy from you!

Finally something that works. Solid, reliable, easy to use. Do not be tempted by cheaper less capable models. You should only need buy a shredder once; this one will not let you down.
At last, something built to last May 23, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
It does what it says with ease...sometimes you have to pay more to get the right result and this is a case in point. Previous reviewers have already listed its attributes and there are no real negatives. In fact, it is actually fun to use and you need to resist the temptation to feed it with everything in the garden...I found the best way to do this is pop round the neighbours and munch up their shrubs & branches. I wouldn't do this if I had any doubts about the build quality so if you can stretch to it, you won't be sorry...
Best value among the electric shredders May 8, 2008 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I've avoided getting garden shredders for several years after trying one of the budget shredders. But now having a larger garden but without anywhere suitable for fires I thought it was worth trying again but avoiding the budget end of the market. Experience shows it was definitely worth getting one of these.
OK it's not silent but it's about as close as you're going to get with a garden shredder. While the budget end of the range have a noisy and very fast spinning blade this has a slow moving spiked cog which pulls the material in and cuts it against a metal plate. But it only runs at about 40 rpm rather than several thousand and even if not silent it's pretty close. Certainly you could probably use this outside someone's bedroom window without too many problems. If it jams unjammming is simply a case of putting it in reverse and running until it spits the waste out and you try again. What you get out isn't so much shredded as chopped into centimetre sized chunks. So not as fine as a shredder but still good enough that it can be used as mulch or just added in with the compost.
The problems are few and relatively minor. With still green waste rather than woody waste it can tend to crush it into a strip rather than cut it but it's still good enough to go into compost or mulch. The access at the top stops you putting oversized material in which is good but does mean that branching material can be awkward to feed in so you might need to cut the occasional side branch before feeding it into this.
Overall, it's probably the most expensive electric shredder you can get but it's certainly better value than the cheap models. So far I've only had this one season and it's probably paid for a quarter of it's cost by using it to make mulch for the garden rather than buy bark chippings so in time it will probably pay for itself. If your garden's large enough to justify a shredder but not so large that you'll buy a petrol powered wood chipper then this is probably the best available option. A good example of how paying more is often the cheaper option in the long run.
You're going to need a bigger compost bin March 20, 2008 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
I bought this when an old, smaller and noisier shredder (not a Bosch) gave up the ghost. I ordered it yesterday morning, and it arrived by 10 this morning - well done Amazon and City Link.
The reviews were right - it's a really good machine. It's simple to assemble - six bolts for the stand and wheels; tools supplied; assembly instructions which for once actually made sense - took me 5 minutes. A minor grouse - the packaging uses a lot of expanded polystyrene, which most councils don't accept for recycling. How about something greener? It comes with a collection bag, which doubles as a dust cover when the machine is back in the shed. The machine is very easy to operate. It chomped its way through branches up to 4 or 4.5cm wide. The automatic feeder is wide enough to take several sticks together, which speeds things up. It works at a comfortable pace. It prefers woody material to thin green stuff, so it seems best to mix the two. It is comfortable to use - no whipping or snatching, so no sore hands after a long period of use. It took me an hour to do what took three hours with the old machine. But best of all, it's quiet. You can hear the birds sing, and you don't have ringing in your ears for the rest of the day. The chips are a bit bigger than with a bladed machine, but I don't think they'll take much longer to compost. In any case it's useful to have a bit of bulk material to mix with grass clippings. I should be able to shred and compost a lot of material which previously I'd have put on the bonfire, so I think I'm going to need a bigger compost bin. Yes, it's more expensive than a smaller, noisier machine, but it's definitely worth paying the extra.
All in all, an excellent machine, which is a pleasure to use. (Yes, that sounds sad, but it's true!)
