5 out of 5 stars Makes my rough uneven garden look like a luxury lawn!   May 12, 2008

I bought this at Homebase as it was a bit cheaper than amazon at the time (111). I've been struggling with a Flymo Compact 330 for the last year, which became too heavy and unpleasant to use, even with the grassbox only half full - not helped by the fragile blade buckling over at both ends! This was because I have an uneven and rough garden of about 130 feet long, so I wanted something that could handle a big garden and yet be light and dare I say pleasant to use.

The Bosch Rotak 40 is a terrific machine, well worth the extra money you have to pay over the likes of the Flymo Compact 330 (which I notice is still rather scandalously on the market). For my first cut using the Rotak my lawn had grown quite long, with flowering dandelions and stinging nettles sprouting up in the grass, particular around the parameter fences which the Flymo wouldn't touch. Pleased to say the Rotak made short shrift of the mess before it, cutting it right back (on the next to lowest setting) in nice stripes! Unlike the Flymo I didn't have to go over my tracks again as it was so well cut at one go, saving huge amounts of time. The really impressive part for me is its capacity to cut grass right up to the fences, even great long grass with brambles growing in it. In half an hour it looked as though my garden had grown wider!

The only drawback is the slower than usual setting up of the grassbox, which i did in my living room as i had been warned of this. It comes in three sections which are all snapped together. The plastic is thin so I wanted to do this carefully, and it took a little longer than I hoped. Because it's not a hover mower, it is also less immediately easy to manouvre around the lawn, but I found I got used to the new way of mowing quickly. Highly recommended if you want a lightweight lawnmower which cuts efficiently and impresses the neighbours.

This lawn mower is the biz !!
I have normally had Qualcast before and then tried Flymo (don't bother as they are awful - mine burnt out after less than one season). This Bosch cuts really short and it's motor is powerful enough to suck up everything in it's wake. It literally is like Hoovering the lawn of any leaves or rubbish and is ideal if, like me, you've got a big garden with a lot of trees. It was a little more expensive than the Flymo that I bought but, quality wise, is several streets ahead. You will not be disappointed

thanks to previous reviewers I have today purchased one of these and it is indeed BRILLIANT. Easy to manouver for a female and does exactly what it is supposed to . have to admit I didn't actually buy it from here cos I wanted it today but got it for the same price at homebase. shame it's started to rain now but I have just done my front lawn in quick time and the grass was very long and quite wet and this mower cut through it with ease. highly recommend it .

5 out of 5 stars My lawn is shorn!!   April 29, 2008

I bought this mower this afternoon after reading the reviews on here, and following a truly horrendous session with our Mow n Vac on the front lawn yesterday. Its only a small area, but the grass was very wet and long and it took me a blister inducing hour and a half to get it vaguely cut, and it still looks a proper mess (plus I had to change the broken blades halfway through the job)
With the prospect of the much bigger back garden to contend with, I decided enough was enough, we needed a new one, so I googled and this one (and also the cheaper Rotak models) came up top in my price bracket. I ended up getting it from Homebase with a magazine discount, so it came to just over 100, which is twice what we spent on the Flymo.
I'm glad to say I wasn't disappointed by performance. It took me longer than I anticipated to assemble, although its not difficult, I had problems aligning the handle screws, and the flimsy grass basket was a pain to click into place. My initial thought was 'ooh its a bit plasticky' as I thought it would feel more robust, but as soon as I started using it, it was obvious why it rates so highly.
It tackled our horribly overgrown wet grass with no problems at all. I think it took me twenty minutes and the lawn looks, well like a lawn now. I used the longest setting (70mm) due to the length of the grass (was about 8 inches in some places) and will have another go with a shorter setting once the grass has had chance to dry out a bit. Its relatively easy to push, not too heavy, and I'm so pleased with the results - we finally have a neat looking garden. I can't believe we struggled all last summer with the Flymo. Doh!

5 out of 5 stars Thunderbird 99 as the lawn-mower is now known...   April 28, 2008

Cutting the grass, for me, has always been a job a bit like polishing the dog. It's nice to see a dog with a shiny nose but I do have better things to do with my time. My Model-T Qualcast Petrol 35S moved with us into a house with grass that was half bowling green and half relief map of the dog's cellulite-thighs. Model-T proved able to cope with the latter about as well as I cope with the weeding (it fainted on the spot as soon as I showed it the task). Enter the Rotak 40 on the strength of other people's reviews here. This machine not only cuts the lumpy bits, it even cuts a very nice dash on the styling front: you won't feel at all silly watching the Missus washing and vacuuming out this wee beastie on the driveway on a Sunday morning before she does the cars and cooks lunch. It starts no matter whether you've visited it or not in the shed over Winter and it handles the first cut of the season (no mean feat in my garden) with ease. Once it has tamed the Winter growth it is just as competent at delicately trimming the bowling-green bits too. The Rotak 40 was born to be a lawnmower. Thoroughly recommended. Even by the Missus and the dawg.
