Bring back the old Burnout April 14, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I was a huge fan of all of the burnouts since the very first one and 'revenge' is probably the best - i actually completed the single player with perfect in all events.
The new freeroaming burnout is a completely differnt game and i ahve to say i don't like it anywhere near a much. In the old games the 'wrong turns' were blocked off, but they're not in this one leading to some errors at 100mph and more than a little frustration. The level up seems similar to older versions but you seem to ride the same routes at each level just in faster cars and there doesn't seem to be as much variation as in burnout revenge.
Burnot has been great up until now - please bring the old version back Criterion
UPdate - i've just recieved a second hand copy of burnout revenge and i intend to work my way through this better game again. If you have neither i would suggest buying revenge over paradise
Fun, just not for long. April 9, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Being a hardcore Burnout series fan, I absolutely could not wait for this game. It was going to be one of my biggest games this year.
So obviously I bought the game and started playing it alot, first impressions weren't amazing, wasn't to keen on free roaming, I mean Burnout is supposedly a racing series. I didn't dislike it because I can't read maps, it's just stupid. If your racing at break neck speed, the last thing you want to be doing is trying to read a badly run map, whilst also trying to plan your next few corners.
And in a racing game, I'd like to be able to go to the menu and select a race, in 'free' raoming, you cannot actually do that, you have to drive around for ages to get to them, and activate a race. It just seems silly for a racing game. Although some people do say the NFS series are racing games, so I guess if you like them, you'll like this!
Another ridiculous feature, or lack of, is that there is no speedo??? I don't think I need to explain why that's annoying.
Anyway after all these flaws, I did actually enjoy the game for a while. I really enjoyed trying to set road rules, and enjoyed a few of the new game modes, although I didn't like stunt run at all, but then again I was awful at it, which is probably why it frustrated me so much.
It's actually quite a good game to play with a few mates over live, completing the challenges is quite enjoyable.
The single player was fun for a while, but you actually have to go through the whole game twice to get your elite license, which is incredibly annoying as going through it once quite a hassle anyway, due to the fact you cant just select a race you have to drive to one. People may argue that point by saying 'well just do an event that's close', but what if the car you're driving isn't suitable for a near event? The whole free roaming thing really isn't good, and I can assure you, there is nothing free about it at all.
If you're a Burnout fan: Don't buy it, rent first.
If you're new to the Burnout series: Rent first, you might like it, but if you do, you'll the old ones.
All in all, it's OK. But definately no way near amazing. In my opinion EA really screwed this game up, as they have with so many others this year.
I had all the other Burnouts, and I had Revenge on the old Xbox, then the 360, and alltogether I had about 3000 hours on it. Paradise lasted about 60.
Not as much fun as it should've been March 31, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
With all the hype about an open world to explore and after enjoying Burnout Revenge I was expecting more from this game. It's just not as much fun as it should've been. There really isn't enough to do while roaming around...how many times can you jump off a ramp and hit a billboard before it gets old. As for the races, it is too easy to take a wrong turn and get lost. Slowing down at junctions and peering at the map ruin the sense of speed.
As for the multiplayer...freeburn just feels half baked. A lot of games I've joined had people just roaming around on their own not talking, and the odd one parked at the roadside complaining about how bored they were. Some of the co-op challenges can be fun but some are very poor. During one game the challenge was to all meet at a junction..so we all drove there and that was it "challenge completed". Erm ok ;D I was expecting something to do when we got there but no, just drive there and you're done.
If you are after a good destruction derby/stunt racer then Flatout UC is a better game. It probably sold a tenth of what Paradise has but then hype is powerful.
Burnt out March 15, 2008 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
This games is probarely one of the best racing smash ups in a long time, but, I don't think any other racing game will be the same so when you do every super jump, crash through evry billboard and do 400 smashes it will be over and never seen again...
I nearly Cried March 10, 2008 14 out of 18 found this review helpful
I am a die hard Burn out fan and when I saw the Paradise in develeopment I wet myself!! after months of waiting I had to buy it on the release date and ran home like a gleeful 12 year old kid who'd been told school was closed because of a snow day!! Then I put it in the machine and...... WASN'T that impressed... I was shocked WHAT THE HELL HAD THEY DONE TO BURNOUT???? why could I not check sameway traffic? Where was my Crash breaker? Why was I driving round a dumb city in a slow ass car? What happened to the fun thrill ride I knew and Loved?? EVERY GRIPE previous reviewers have had I had BELIEVE IT! Ladies and gentleman I am here to tell you if you give this game a chance you will abandon your old religion and join the church of Paradise!! First off every one who played the demo BELIEVE ME it does not do the ACTUAL game justice (graphics/speed/playability nada.) You need a bit of time to get this game for several reasons: 1.) The first few cars you get are DELIBERATELY SLOWER to get you used to the driving system and the principle of the games and developing familiarity with a couple of routes and landmarks (there is a great learning curve hear perfectly pitched to help you get used to the different strengths and weaknesses of each car type and style!) If you had the cars I have now at the Start? you would crash every time you turn on the engine!! 2.) The free burn element of the game is not a weakness AS EVEN I Thought (any one who knows me knows I hate admitting i'm wrong but...) the reason this exists rather than simply teleporting you to the next event is so you CAN drive around and DISCOVER new and insane short cuts, jumps billboards that aren't even marked on your map!! If I had a pound for every time i've been on a drive and gone huh? where does this go? SWEEEEETTT!!!! 3.) The fact you cant just smack everyone out of the way with a well timed nudge is a blessing as far as skill and longjevity of this game go!! Every time you go up a rank or complet more events you will start noticing more traffic on the road ;-) this is DELIBERATE and will quickly start to remove you from your comfort zone and demand you give up on Silly things like blinking!!
That takes care of the things I initally hated now the things I loved!! Blistering pace, awesome soundtrack, beautiful cars that look like a post pimp my ride jobby and I have not even been on line to play this yet where it can only get better!!
Nuff said BUY IT and if you don't believe me rent it then come back and thank me!!!
