3 out of 5 stars I smolder with generic rage!   May 29, 2008

I really don't understand the praise heaped upon this series, maybe it's just not for me, but god is it overrated.

The graphics are great, but the character design is pretty uninspired, the developers have been given a chance to go absolutely mental in a fairly underused aesthetic (Greek mythology) and artistically, it all feels like such a 7/10 effort. The combat is good in a button mashy could-do-it-with-your-eyes-closed way and the rpg elements are.....great, not because they're anything special but simply because the game would be awful were they not present, the puzzles are nothing that hasn't been done long before and far better.

The camera angle takes some getting used to, it sort of holds you at arms length rather than immersing you in the action...and the theme of being kept at a distance is pretty apt in the choice of protagonist. Everyone seems perfectly happy to ignore the fact that Kratos is one of those generic rage and angst filled characters straight out of the scribbles in the margin of a market researchers notebook.

So basically, it's a more violent Prince of Persia featuring a one-note unlikeable gimp the main character. Sigh.
