Amazon.co.uk Preview There aren't many games which list a critique of objectivism as one of its selling points, but then Bioshock isn't like other games. Indeed the only titles it can easily be compared to are System Shock and its sequel, to which this is a spiritual successor. Instead of being set in a derelict space ship though the game's story involves you exploring a mysterious underwater city after a plane crash. The city had been created as an art deco paradise for the intellectual elite but is now in ruins and populated only by grotesque mutants - both physically and mentally.Although at first sight the game appears to be a first person shoot `em-up it is not primarily an action game. Your goal is survival, not extermination, with ammunition limited and many enemies far more powerful than yourself. You are able to upgrade your abilities though, both physical and psychic, by collecting Adam - the mutagen which was the cause of the disaster in the first place. Even so the best way to defend yourself is to play the creatures and environments against themselves, tricking one group into fighting against another or taking control of security robots and devices. The game gives you full freedom to play the game exactly as you want, while at the same time creating a living world which carries on with or without you - with many creatures not even bothering to acknowledge you unless you attack them. With stunning graphics, especially the water effects, and an extremely disturbing atmosphere this could well be the most intelligently macabre video game ever made. HARRISON DENT

Fun! July 22, 2008 I don't know why but it took me until a couple of weeks ago to buy this. For less than 15 from a seller on here, Bioshock is easily the best buy for my Xbox360. And i'd argue its the best game of the console altogether.
The game starts with you floating in the middle of the atlantic ocean, watching the tail end of a plane sink to the depths. Immediately you want to know what this is all about. You swim to a conveniently-near lighthouse, and inside is a bathysphere, the door to an underworld city called Rapture. From there on you find yourself in a horrific world, where you have to do fight with equally horrific creatures, and put your trust in one of the few sane people remaining, and in ADAM - a mutagen, giving you powerful abilities such as telekinises and freeze.
The story is brilliant, you'd struggle to find one better. Throughout the game you learn about what Rapture is, who Andrew Ryan is, and why everything has gone very wrong. You then have to make your own choice which affects the difficulty of the game, and the ending. Again this is about the ADAM. Eventually you learn the truth about how you found Rapture, or how it found you.
I just expected a FPS with a decent story, but its so much more than your typical FPS. The fact that you never see the face or hear the voice of the sole playable character didn't bother me at all, and maybe its because that person is you, especially given that your choices affect Jack and what he becomes at the end. Along with MGS4 i consider this to be my best experience on either console. But in terms of gameplay and great fun, this has to be #1 for me. I could play this for hours, i don't think i've ever been as disappointed for a game to end as i did here. But having spent so little in comparison to CoD4, MGS4, GTA4 and all the other big name titles, i am extremely satisfied with Bioshock.

Rapture (Bioshock's underwater city for mankind's elite) is a brilliantly conceived and constructed edifice of hideousness, full of ego and pomposity. The levels of detail throughout Bioshock are astounding, every corner of the game (and it is VAST) is littered with believeable items and details which I have never seen before, and most of which can be interacted with in some way. From the flooded, eerily lit basements to the trashed luxurious apartments of Rapture's founding fathers (and mothers), it is Rapture itself which is the true star of Bioshock and is the reason I would recommend anyone to buy this game. Its the best, most consistent game world that I think I have ever seen. As for the action, I'm sad to say that this is Bioshock's weakpoint. While there are many ways to kill those around you, you very rarely find any real satisfaction in doing so. The Splicers are repetitive and infuriating, often 'appearing' from no where. There random maniacal screams and shouts soon get tiresome and you are likely to hunt them down just to shut them up as much as anything else. The guns feel soft and useless, especially in later levels when the Splicers become harder - for no other reason than the fact that you are more powerful, so for them not to be so would make the game too easy. There are only 4 different types of splicer (Thuggish, Leadhead, Spider and Nitro), two types of Big Daddy, and the guns and various turrets to contend with, a limitation which ends up leaving the game feeling rather flat and laboured when you are struggling through the same old enemies time after time.
The story is sometimes hard to follow, especially when you're receving a vital voice over in the middle of a firefight! I suggest putting on the subtitles if you want to really understand the story. Its sometimes true that you hear a part of the story get played out (always via radio transmissions or recordings) and have an objective as a result that you simply cannot link to what you've just heard, which is annoying. However, again the depth of the story is to be applauded, as it truly makes you examine your motives and morals, even though you have no choice but to continue on the path the game sets you. The only 'moral' choice you have is in whether to harvest or heal the young girls which provide you with Adam.
My version of the game was full of bugs in places, and I know my friend experienced similar. It sometimes slows down, even where it is not due to too much action on screen, and on occasion the 'physics' engine goes haywire. My friend at one point lost all his guns and powers but found he was invincible - but he couldn't jump! The only way to solve it was to reset the 360!
The finale .... well i won't say too much other than it also left me rather disappointed.
Verdict: Bioshock is an incredible example of design and dedication to detail taken to its highest degree in gaming - Rapture is incredible in every way and is a credit to 2K Australia. The rest of the game is compelling and addictive, but can sometimes be very drawn out and dull. It will eat up hours of your life as you search every room for clues and items, but don't expect it to be the most action packed game or adrenalin rush you've ever played. Call of Duty 4 it is not!
Brilliant Game January 31, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a short to the point review, brilliant game, Story, graphics, upgrades of which there are loads! just got a bit sick of doing the hacks and the movement of the player is a bit slow for my liking! minor nags to a near perfect game!
Bored November 25, 2007 0 out of 10 found this review helpful
I dont understand the big deal with this game. I got to the second level and realised that i wasnt having anything resembling fun, i was just bored. it seemed all you do is walk around some 1960s undewater labyrinth and shoot/fire magic at surprise retards that jump out at you. oh, and every so often you have to kill one of those big guys in a diving suit, which is just annoying because you have to waste all your ammo. and then repeat. I ended up in the situation where i was thinking "well i bought this game so i should really play it" then 10 minutes in i was turning it off again. As mediocre as halo was, at least it was fun.
I traded it in and got EA skate, which i recommend buying over this uselessness very strongly.
