 Failed to reach it's potential July 2, 2008
As a big fan of Norse mythology I was heavily let down by this title. The story line is poorly constructed, and developed even worse, and the game seems to expect the user to already know/not care what is going on. Some of the fighting sequences can be quite enjoyable, but I feel the lack of immersion into the world of vikings really takes away from any positives in this game.

Where do I even start with this diabolical game?!
Well lets start with the good:
The title is very clever. You ARE a Viking. AND you are in a battle for Asgard. The title is 100% spot on there.
Right now we have the good stuff out of the way let's start on the bad points:
*Vikings don't have horses:
They don't. This means that you get to walk EVERYWHERE.
*Vikings do however have teleports:
Yep, you can teleport everywhere! Forget the Egyptians! Vikings skipped all of the basic modes of transport and when straight into the realms of Star Trek.
*Vikings NEVER DIE:
Well you won't EVER. In fact there are no consequences what-so-ever for you dying. Every time you get killed you just come back to life and can teleport back to near enough the exact location that you were killed in. So essentially before you begin this game you know the outcome. You are immortal so the legions of Hell are royally screwed from the start. The legions of Hell do have one trick up their sleeve though, the game is so monotonous that you will more than likely give up the fight within a few minutes of starting it!
*20 Vikings can't break a flimsy looking wooden gate:
They can't. No really the strong Viking horde is no match for a wooden gate. So they just have to wait there until you come along and rip the gate open yourself... Makes you wonder why you are bothering to save them really... You would more than likely be better off without them!
Actually sorry, this game is so god-awful that I have even lost the will to write this review. JUST AVOID IT at all costs!
Things I have learned from this game:
*Hordes of Vikings can't break wooden gates
*Amazon don't let you give a game 0 stars
*Vikings walked or ran everywhere
*Gamestation gives you a decent price on trade in for terrible games
*Death has no consequence what-so-ever, which is a shame because I was considering killing Sega for making this god awful pile of sh*te.

this game is so you get to be a super strong viking with an axe and a nsword and you can get super powers to do more damage to your enemies and you can slice your eniemes so powerfully it is son great

Lots of mixed reviews have come out for this game, I bought it expecting it to be like a Dynasty Warriors game i.e. a 3D free roaming battlefield with hundreds of enemies onscreen most of the time and endless chopping through them but the game really isn't like that for the majority of the time. I would compare it more to the Conan game that came out about a year ago in such that you generally explore and perform small quests while hacking small groups of monsters apart and building up an army in preparation for a big fight. Obviously the graphics are better here and a 3D world which is beatiful at time has been created. Each level or Isle builds up slowly to a big battle at the end which looks very impressive onscreen but has very specific objectives for you to complete.
Sneaking around enemy camps picking off monsters one by one instead of just charging in and getting surrounded reminds me of the Tenchu games - albeit without all the ninja gadgets. At times you are forced to be stealthy and some gamers will hate this but those sections add a nice change of pace and tension to the game. The addition of some RPG elements, finding pots of gold, buying upgrades etc is pretty basic stuff - you won't be changing weappons or picking herbs etc like Oblivion.
After about 6 hours playing so far I've completed the first Isle and am half way through the next and I'd deffinately say it's worth playing through if you're a fan of this game type but clearly many won't be.

Well if you didn't like Assassins creed then avoid this one at all costs!
remember assassins creed? Jogging around Damascus, Acre, Jerusalem rescuing the same civilians, the same investigations, Al-Tairs same boring speeches at the end of every one? Well welcome to the wonderful world of the Viking!
Jog around even slower than you do in Creed (yes you cant even sprint to make the boredom go a little quicker) Endless boring missions (Collecting ale for Gods sake!) Rescuing imprisoned Vikings (Read 'civilians' in Creed) The controls make Creed look stunning! For all the kill in slow motion and diced up bodies it doesn't alter the fact that all you are really doing is pressing X a few times. You will notice as I have after a few plays that the game deliberately lets you die a couple of times just to drag it out a bit more. You think I am joking? Just play it you will notice you will be killed attacking a shamen for example the first time then the second time you do exactly the same thing and you kill it!
So what do you get for your 25 odd pounds? Jog around for a bit in fantastic scenery, pick up gold bags, ale, food etc, rescue Vikings to build up you army, fight a few ugly enemies, jog back to your home village, jog around a bit more, listen to tedious information about missions and you pretty much have the game.
The missions are basically 5 minute missions made into half an hour missions becase you have to jog halfway around a mountain to get there or jog back to where you came from just to jog somewhere else. At least in Assassins creed you were spared this by being able to fast forward.
The kill mode is absolutely awful. You will notice when you are fighting multiple enemies you have no sense of direction because the computer is buisy doing those "dice up the body" scenes so the other enemy has plenty of time to come up and hack half your life off you.
In comparison to Creed; In Creed the controls are faster, the kill is better and at least you have a few other things to side track you (Punching the living daylights out of beggars and the insane being one) In this it just seems even more so than Creed that the designers are just looking at things to consume your time rather than give you an entertaining game.
Stand by to see hundreds of these for sale second hand within the next 6 months I guarantee it.
