Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, is a next-gen experience complete with top-of-the-line graphics and surround sound designed for the Sony PlayStation 3. Featuring the most revealing display of Kojima Production's premier title, MSG4 details the world where Snake must under go his final mission. In a world overrun by private military companies (PMCs), wars are no longer fought over nations or ideologies. Instead, the wars of the future are micro-managed by overarching PMCs, right down to the bullet. New gadgets and abilities fuel Snake's journey deep into the enemy domains of the Middle East, South America, and beyond. New gear includes "Metal Gear Mk. II," the ultimate reconnaissance tool, and "Solid Eye," which gives Snake real-time information on enemies and his surroundings.

Joined by a familiar cast of characters, Snake must once again return to the battlefield to confront his lifelong rival, Liquid Ocelot, who is manipulating the world's wars from the one world where soldiers will always have a place. But Liquid Ocelot is not the only one who will be able to manipulate the world's wars--Snake can destabilize opposing forces by working behind the scenes, supporting the local militia as they fight PMCs, creating a smokescreen that allows Snake to move freely within the war-zone.

MGS4 is a next-generation adventure set in the aftermath of MGS2: Sons of Liberty. The concept behind the latest Metal Gear Solid project is "no place to hide," and this edition in the series will force Snake into unexpected circumstances with an all-new storyline that breaks away in some ways from the previous MGS franchise entries. We don't want to spoil it for you, but, producer Hideo Kojima did reveal some very juicy bits about the game and the storyline when it was first announced at E3 of 2006. "Until now," said Kojima, "we've released two entries of the MSX2 Metal Gear series, and three entries in the Metal Gear Solid series. Add to this Portable Ops, and you get a total of six titles. All mysteries will be cleared up in Metal Gear Solid 4."

Kojima was very clear about the finality of MSG4, leaving gamers to wonder, "Will Snake die?!" When asked if the story will come to this sort of an end, Kojima responded without the slightest bit of vagueness, "It will come to an end." The MGS4 E3 trailer showed a number of characters from the Metal Gear and Metal Gear Solid histories. This final instalment is sure to deliver loads of cameos, in fact, it is rumoured that nearly all the characters from the series will make an appearance.

In addition to a return of classic Metal Gear Solid characters, the gameplay systems from part three are also expected to make a comeback. The camouflage system from part three will make it into MGS4, with the addition of "OctoCamo," Snake's most advanced stealth suit to date. The name appears to be formed from the words "Octopus" and "camouflage," and players will be awestruck by the chameleon-like camo that changes with the surroundings. OctoCamo allows Snake to blend in with his environment as it digitally manifests nearby textures in real time. Think if it this way, if Snake is standing next to a wall worn out with holes, he too will appear to be riddled with holes. It has also been revealed that MGS4 will have online play, but no specifics have been released. Although very little information is known about the game's visuals, rumour has it that MGS4 is expected to be the finest representation of console graphics on the PS3, and it is expected that they will just get better and better as the game nears its release date.

5 out of 5 stars A brillant ending to a fantastic series!   July 23, 2008
Metal Gear Solid is no doubt a savour for the playstation 3, as on release it sold not only vast amounts of the game, but people were buying playstation 3 consoles just to play the game!

Myself being a massive MGS fan enjoyed this game imencly, but however, i would not say that it is the best in the series. Talking of the good points, its fun, its a challenge, a work of art, and makes you think about all your actions and moves- everything you do will count towards something (The noises you make, the smell, your stress etc...). And most of all, it feels like an MGS game! And answers all questions in the seires beautifully at the end.

Unfortunatly though, it does have its bad points, one being that because the game is so big and the cut scenes being so long, their isnt many unlockables for completing the game (No boss survival, no demo theater, no dog tag collector, nothing :/ ) The game was short considering its a playstation 3 game, where i paced my self over 4 days to finally complete it. The bosses do come quiet easy, as most i did on my first try, and yes this was on normal difficulty, and the top things off, theirs more cutscenes than their is gameplay :/. But none the less, it still is an amazing and enjoyable game.

The game does enclude metal gear online, which is a joy to play, though it does take some time to set up and register, but after all this it is a fun game to play which will not loose its novalty after a few hours play.

So overall, if you are a Metal Gear Solid fan, this is a must buy, as it has some nice memories in the game, and is definatly the most advanced in the series. If you've never played the series or dislike the games, then i still recomend getting it, as it's something that has never been seen before in gaming and is definatley a dulless and remarkable game. It could of been a bit more harder and longer, but hey, it already filled a 50gb blu ray disk, so you couldnt really ask for more : )

3 out of 5 stars Lazy game development   July 21, 2008

Whether you are a fan or not of the MGS series, this is lazy game development in my opinion. 90% of this is watching cutscenes....no development there apart from graphics and sewing up the plot. To sell this as a game is criminal, interactive DVD would have been more like it to be honest....to have to sit though cutscene after scene wondering when you might actually have to do anything is ridiculous. To add insult to this, the developers even let you press a button in the cutscene to change the camera angle....like this is enought to class it as a game!

If it wasn't for these cutscenes the game play would be extremely short....chapter 3 for example. I reckon the game play is probably only about 10-15 minutes....total time to complete about 2 to 2 1/2 hours!!!

If want a game to actually play stick with COD4. i would only buy this if you are a die hard MGS fan....I would even say that the MG Acid games on the PSP are better than this....

If this is the future of PS3 games, then they will certainly lose out to Nintendo, who have dumped all this padding and concetrated on giving people what they want - games you actually play and get involved in!

5 out of 5 stars should be given a sixth star rating   July 21, 2008
firstly i have seen ratings as low as two or even one, usually because of complaints about the length of some of the scenes. Personally i appreciate it, as it clearly shows immense effort and a clear love which the creators have put in to this masterpiece, besides there is the ability to SKIP if you are really on the verge of suicide...
Anyway this has really blown everything else out of the water, if this was on xbox rather than ps it probably couldve destroyed ps forever, but it is ultimately sonys saviour in 3rd generation consoles.
The story is complicated true, ive had the game for a few weeks and only yesterday have i finally understood the whole story. But thats a good thing as it adds re-playability to the game besides the huge list of efforts awards and ofcourse on the games internet challenges.
I could go on for hours about the customizable weapons, the cool gadgets, the graphics and the great voice acting, but you have probably heard it all before- its all amazing.
What i will say is that i have never seen so much love and attention to detail in a game which kojima clearly has such a huge connection with and is probably going to miss solid snake more than anyone. Even if youve played this game again and again and still do not like it you must appreciate the effort put in.
I was certainly sad at the ending which is a great end to a great story and gaming series, goodbye snake and thankyou

4 out of 5 stars The reason I bought a PS3   July 21, 2008
This is, to be honest, the reason I bought a Playstation 3. My mate bought it the day of release, I went to his house a few days after he had completed it, and, wow. He booted up Shadow Moses, and I was overcome with nostalgia. I remembered the days of running through the Nuclear Disposal Facility for that first time, getting to grips with the best character I had ever controlled. Solid Snake, voiced in in "Solid" series by the excellent David Hayter.

And the voices are really what drives these games imo, the voices used, are for the most part, excellent, lending emotion and realism to the out there script.

I will reiterate, I ONLY bought this game (and a ps3), because of the Shadow Moses stage of the game, I had alot of spare cash ok?
But I was wrong to buy it just for that. Personally I thought the beginning was rather slow, and I wasn't sure if I could get used to the idea of "Old Snake", but as usual, expert characterisation got me backing Snake to the end. And what an end it is!

The only dissapointment for me, storywise, was the revelation of the Patriots, who they are. Was anyone else dissapointed by who they were?

Oh well, all in all, the gameplay mechanics are awesome, the story for the most part, is awesome, the cutscenes are not intrusive if your a fan of the series, as it ties up all the loose ends in the story we've been waiting for, and the Octocamo doesn't make the stealth aspect as easy as I might have thought.

I give this game 4 stars, missing that fifth star for the blatant smoking by Snake when I'm trying to quit :-P, and the unveiling of the Patriots identities, which dissapointed me.

Overall though, a stellar game, well deserving of it's mass praise.
