Mass Enjoyment? July 21, 2008 I bought this used off marketplace once i realised it was properly developed for the PC and not just a console port.Maybe i was one of the lucky ones in terms of being able to install it at the 1st time of asking,as it sounds like some people have had issues with it.The fact of the matter is this game is absolutely superb in virtually every department and is one of the most immersive stories you could hope to play and is probably the best 20 odd quid i've spent on a game. Those who have played Knights Of The Old Republic 1+2 will have a good idea what to expect, but this builds on that format and cranks it up a notch. The combat is satisfying,in real time and there's no need to queue up attacks. The unchartered space exploration missions can be an interesting diversion from the main story and those who choose to attempt all the side quests will find themselves occupied for weeks. The game will throw up several interesting choices which if you keep your save games will have a bearing on how Mass Effect 2 plays out. There's always the option to replay and do things differently if you so desire.
Sounds and graphics are excellent,as is the voice acting and if you take the time to speak to your crew each has their own back story which will either endear you to them or not,as the case may be.
I have experienced the odd crash, but nothing which has really disrupted the continuity of the game.In fact the only negative i can think of is the additional Bring Down The Sky content doesn't ship with the game and at the time of writing is still not available for download, despite it saying the opposite on the back of the box!As this will be free though, this is hardly a major gripe.
In all, anyone who is a fan of either Bioware or the KOTOR franchise will love this.To those who haven't experienced them,my advice to you would be to take a punt on this. It's one of the most polished and stylish games there is.To miss this would be to miss out.
heavily underrated July 15, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
many of the reviews I've read focus on the DRM, but copyright and DRM is not the point of reviews, just a part of reviews, the quality of the game should be the purpose of reviews, so this review will be based on the content rather than the protection, after all, don't you want to know what the game is like?
loading the game and playing the game, I have had no problems, the storyline is gripping and the universe is huge, excellent voice acting, if you're a scifi fan or RPG fan you will love this game. this game is as gripping as freelancer.
without giving too much away, you take control of Shepard where you're being evalulated as a spectre and things start to spiral out of control from there. you can play the good or bad guy to achieve your goal, depending on the dialogue you choose. The game is mostly a third person shooter, but there are times where you're on a galaxy map screen, decoding a computer or dealing with dialogue. squadplay can give as little or as much control as you like, making it possible to play the entire game without controlling your squad to do anything, or control every action of your squad.
The only downside I can see is that the uncharted worlds look like their maps have been computer generated, with jagged surfaces and random textures.
No no no July 15, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Retailers should refuse to sell these DRM games....seriuosly....Guess what?? My Harddrive just failed, and i can't re-instil Mass Effect again! What a rip off. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Very Hard To Believe... July 15, 2008 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
... that so many people are knocking this game over a simple protection issue. The simple fact is, you're reviewing the content of the game; it's playability; graphics; storyline, fun-factor, etc. not the fact that the company are trying to protect their intellectual content (even if they do go about it in a totally gash way). But even so, this shouldn't be a problem. I'm a pretty big gamer - when I have the time - and I'm constantly installing and uninstalling. But with a game of this quality, I have no qualms over leaving it on my hard-drive. What's 4-5 gbs on a decent sized hard-drive? Absolutely nothing.
As for the game itself, I can honestly say having played both KoToR games, this is far superior. Much like the earlier BG games, the content and background of those two was already in place from 25 years prior, while this is a story/background/history created from scratch. Bioware have excelled themselves. Again. The interface and controls really knock your for six initially, as you don't really have the same 'pause game, steady yourself, kick ass at your own pace' option you did in those games, but that is more because the AI of enemies is a lot more impressive; they will literally hide behind whatever's at hand if their numbers begin to dwindle, and you have no option but to go over there and weed them out. And if the have the numerical advantage they will all target whichever of your group has been weakened the most. Very simple, but effective touches like this make the game great. A lot of people have compared the action side of this game to other out-and-out shooters but as that isn't really a genre that interests me, I can't really agree or disagree. The one thing I will say though, is that, at least in ME you have a very clear reason as to why you're shooting at the enemies, and it's not just because they're in your way.
The only slight (and by slight, I can't stress how slight I mean) downside is the sheer amount of background info available to read throughout. I can honestly say I spent and hour or more at a time reading through various histories and backgrounds of races as the game progressed, and if that isn't your thing you'll get bogged down. But if you like the storyline aspect, it's a sweet touch, as it really builds up a sense of history and purpose. The characters are all very typical but voiced so well. Especially Lance Henrinkssons turn as the fleet commander who keeps bugging your ship to go on some mission or other.
Anyway, this review has been pretty long, so i'll bring it to a close now. This is a game for many different types of people, however if your attention span is short, you're highly impatient or you just prefer to shoot stuff then i'd advise you buy Duke Nukem or Donkey Kong because this game requires time and effort. Much like the time and effort that was put into making it...

Great Game, well at least the 10 Minutes I saw of it... July 11, 2008 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
Well, my sister got home with this game and it looked amazing. We love the KOTOR series so far, and adore Jade Empire, so we decided that this game woudl be amazing. So we tried installing it, and then the problem occured. It wouldn't work on our graphics cards. It did on mine(NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GS) for about 10 mins, until the screen went black and we lost input, with the sound still going.
The graphics it self were fine, there was no jerkyness and everything worked fine, but it kept on crashing and crashing until we couldn't not be bothered to try again. So we went out and bought 2 ATI graphics cards that were alot better (or so they said) than mine, but the graphic card messed up and wouldn't help it.
This game would be amazing if it would work... so I wouldn't waist your money on the PC version, go for the X-box 360, it should not crash there!
