Amazon.co.uk Preview
With the latest movie almost making up for the quality of the first two films it looks like Star Wars has won back the hearts and minds of fans everywhere and Battlefront II aims to be the perfect celebration of that. Like the original it's a sort of Star Wars version of PC hit Battlefield 1942, where two armies face off against each other, either off or online, jumping in and out of various vehicles as they find them.

Of course in Battlefield 1942 "various vehicles" meant jeeps and tanks, in Battlefront II it means X-wings, TIE Fighters, AT-ATs and, for the first time, Episode III vehicles like the BARC speeder, Jedi Starfighter II and V-wing.

The biggest change to the game, apart from the new vehicles, is space battles with several of the levels taking part aboard giant space cruisers which you can exit in starfighters, have a dogfight in deep space around and then pilot back to for a bit more on foot combat. Levels include the Blockade Runner from the beginning of A New Hope, the space battle above Coruscant and Utapau and Mustafa from Episode III.

Another long awaited addition is playable Jedi, although you can only be one for a short time so as to not unbalance the gameplay. Although the emphasis is on online play the single player mode has been beefed up with better artificial intelligence and a proper story linking all the missions. "Star Wars fans, like this, they will", as Yoda would say (if he was real and wrote game previews instead of being a Jedi Master). -- Harrison Dent

This preview is based on an incomplete version of the game; features or problems mentioned above may not appear in the finished game.

4 out of 5 stars Be at the front of the battle!   January 20, 2008

Be at the the front of the battle in this 1-2player game. fight with any of the four teams: good clones, bad clones, repubilics or droids. Or fight for the galaxy were you play as any of the four teams and vs one of three left, or just do missions. The only thing different about this one to the first is that you have they awsome jedi, with the awsome force. when you play a battle you choose what player you want to be and then kill as many as you can, trying to destroy thier 150 men or take over all the command posts and hold them for 20 seconds. so i recomend this game because for the price it is a hands on game. even if you're not a star wars fan you'll like this game and soon become a fan.

5 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT!!!!   January 1, 2008

This game is brilliant for those fans of Star Wars. The characters are, especially good, and the graphics brilliant, especially if you are used to Star Wars Battlefront 1.
I recommend this for any level of ability. This is a very good gift too, hours of enjoyment.
I hope you found this helpful,

4 out of 5 stars feel the force   December 4, 2007

really fun to play and lots of different hero and villian characters aswell as unit types to chose from. fun missions with some variety but the best bit is choosing your map and just playing c.t.f good lifespan but it could be said that the story modes too short.

4 out of 5 stars Incredible game, but where are the checkpoints?   August 4, 2007
2 out of 3 found this review helpful

With checkpoints, I would of given Star Wars Battlefront II a 10/10. But I'm cursed with a very impatient nature and when a game makes me repeat stuff too much, I dunno I just cant hack it. So, basically I gave up on this game halfway through and its such a shame cos its such a great game apart from the frustration aspect. The levels are explosive, exciting and full of various different objectives eg, defend and area, carry something somewhere, kill some jedi, kill some massive monsters (which are really fun to gun down), become a jedi and massacre some battle droids etc etc etc. and thats just the land missions, you also get space battles, which are great fun. Its full of different objectives and this really keeps the action very interesting and at its core level its really such a great game. BUT, I would like to ask the developers this one thing - have you ever heard of a checkpoint? No? BLIMMIN IDIOTS!!! When I complete a really hard objective and I'm then faced with another even harder objective, and then fail, I dont want to have to go all the way back to the beggining and spend ages trying to get the first one right again just so I can do the even harder one, only to fail again and have to go all the way back to the beginning and spend ages.....see what I mean? Really the developers just made certain levels annoying to play, I mean why on earth didnt they stick in some checkpoints? Minus the frustration of the save system this game could have been truly amazing, but the gameplay is severely hampered by the annoying constant repeating of the various mission objectives, and I got so sick of the cycle that I gave up. So my verdict is a generous 8/10, and thats very generous and its only cos the game is so inventive and fun. (I really should give it 5/10 cos come on basically, where are the checkpoints? It really drags the game down) But other people might just have the patience for it, I dont know see for yourself, its well worth giving it a shot just for the experience of it, cos I cant stress enough it really is a fantastic game, especially if your a major star wars fan like me.

The game uses a lock on system for its shooting, dont worry its not a rubbishy "hold down the L1 button and fire" job that takes all the fun out of it, its a sort of loose thing where you have to aim at the target and then if the target moves, you move with it. I dont actually even like that system to be honest, I like to do all my own aiming, but you cant have everything and it doesnt matter all that much. Its actually pretty fun to use, even if I'd rather it wasnt there.

The game, apart from the story mode, has a strategy mode where you take over the galaxy using strategy. This is pretty easy and quite repetitive so I didnt stay on there for long but some people into RPG's might like the idea of building up your army but I couldnt be bothered with it.

The game also has instant action modes. All in all, an impressive package, if only the story mode had checkpoints.
