ARMs at the Ready! June 4, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The 5th instalment in this hugely popular series has hit our shores, sort of! I was lucky enough to find a copy and was assured by shop staff that there aren't many around. This is a real shame as it's a close second to Wild Arms 3, in my opinion, the best of the bunch. No.5 concerns a young drifter called Dean and the compadres he meets along the way, pretty standard RPG fare but executed with all the best bits from each previous story - worthy of this 10th anniversary edition. The hex battle system from Wild Arms 4 is back and works brilliantly, keeping battles nice and fast and stunning to watch. The graphics, in particular the landscape, remind me of Star Ocean Story: Until the End of Time and are something to see, all accompanied with the whistly wild west themed soundtrack. Levelling up the characters is left totally to your own design as you allocate "growth points" earned through battle to enable new skills and boost the powers of the mystical mediums you collect along the way. If you don't like the way your character is evolving, you can take back the points allocated and add them to another skill. I'm not a huge way into the game but a great deal has happened already and I'm sucked in for the long haul. It promises to be one hell of an adventure, with the added draw of characters from all of the previous games being part of the story in some way or another. I felt no 4 lacked a little of the magic of the earlier games, but in no.5, we're back with the Wild Arms we loved from the beginning. If you can find it, buy without hesitation.
