3 out of 5 stars to be honest... i liked it!   April 15, 2008

there's something about hugh grant that makes me hate to love him. He always seems to play the same parts but thats ok, i thought this was a sweet film, and drew barrymore plays the character of Sophie with gentle ease and confidence. Hugh Grant's 80's has-been persona is a comic and aged look at what happens after your time as a star. Very good and some nice tunes to throw in. Worth a look.

1 out of 5 stars Stars going through the motions   April 15, 2008

Two reasonably well respected (if middle of the road and typecast) actors with a fairly bland script that is really going nowhere. You can see any plot development a mile off, and the only time you might want to consider this one is if you are on a first date. At least it will not harm your date and might put you in the mood.

Its romantic comedy. The script has some interjections of humour and potential but its done in such a hollywood fashion that you see every twist in the plot five minutes before it arrives.

2 out of 5 stars Oh dear...   March 28, 2008

Wet is one way to sum up this film. That and predictable and boring. I don't usually mind chick flick type films - you're usually guaranteed something average...a Sunday afternoon type film. This is pretty bad - I wouldn't bother if I were you. If you want something of this genre you can do a lot better than to watch this...

4 out of 5 stars Strong com weak rom   March 18, 2008

A film of real strengths and weaknesses. Its not just a Hugh-Grant-by-numbers rom-com. Its an all singing all dancing HG by numbers rom-com! As usual he's a whizz at the comedy (and unexpectedly good as a musician!) but oddly uncomfortable in the romance.

What's good about it? The leading actors play to their strengths. Hugh Grant delivers the dry, witty one-liners (hundreds!) with perfect timing and tone. He plays a self-mocking, 80's musical has-been effortlessly. His lyricist/discovery is Sophie Fisher, quirky, cute and radiant as only Drew Barrymore would play her. So far so safe...

What's GREAT about it? Firstly the 80s music is brilliant and Hugh does a vey passable pop singer. As others have said the POP video is a scream and very very well done. I'm definitely getting the soundtrack. Also standout performances from the supporting actors - Alex's agent and Sophie's sister are hilarious and human. They give the film its heart and soul, an essential component of any rom-com. But what absolutely captivated me and drew me to watch it over and over is the magical unfolding of the SONG. We are initially given tantalising glimpses of their hidden talents in Sophie's early wordplay and Alex's haunting melody for 'Love Autopsy' (it's on the CD by the way). Even tho past trauma has led each of them to bury their creative talents under safe, unchallenging grooves, you know they are going to produce something amazing..."A way back into Love" (and life) for them. Corny but hey...delivers the wish-fulfilment on this beautifully!

What's bad about it? Absolutely NO chemistry between these guys. Rom-com needs a healthy dose of connection for the romance to be credible - here it's more like they are each showcasing their own comic set pieces, rarely in the same frame - as if they shot their lines at different times and the two were cut together. Yes, coming up with a song in a few days, they do become familiar, but it's more like long-suffering siblings, arguing over bad handwriting and bickering over shared creative space, than the intimacy of lovers or potential lovers. Too much teasing and not enough (make that no!) tenderness. Even after their eventual night together, he wakes up to bang his head and rushes to answer the phone - end of moment...disappointing. It would have been a better film to leave them as a great song-writing team and platonic friends, I think.

So, the film does some things well and others horribly. I would recommend renting first, depending on which aspects impact on you most, you will either give up and return it after half an hour or enjoy it for the genuine entertainment content it does provide.

4 out of 5 stars A Little 80's nostalgia   March 6, 2008

This movie won't be everyone's cup of tea - and some people think its the corny of all cornyness. But who cares!?!? this is the ultimate throwback full of corny 80's style music and corny 80's romance - I enjoyed it...
