Great concert, Great band but unfortunately I have to return it June 10, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Great concert!!! Well as far as I managed to watch since Disc II was identical with Disc III and therefore ended up with a copy of the documentary and missed the 2nd part of the concert!!!! Hopefully Amazon will replace it.....
Turn it on again...and again...and again..and again!! June 6, 2008 Don't worry about disc 1. There was a fault on the initial batch, but Amazon replaced mine without a quibble and the replacement works just fine.
As for the show, it is amazing! David Mallet has done a fantastic job in capturing not only a fantastic concert, but also the sheer scale of the event on the night. The sound and visuals are excellent (in particular the 5.1 and dts soundtracks) and really draw you in when watching.
I had the privilege to see band at Twickenham and the 'Cinema Show' from Dusseldorf and despite my familiarity with the set and the lighting, watching this was still like seeing the concert for the first time. There's plenty for the non-Genesis die-hards too with great performances of their early songs right through to their more 'popular' hits such as Turn It On Again, Follow You, Follow Me, Invisible Touch, etc.
What's also great is the value-for-money aspect. Not only do you get the whole concert (nearly two and a half hours), but also the fascinating 'Come Rain or Shine' documentary (one and a half hours). This gives a real insight into some of the crazy discussions that went on behind the scenes and takes you through the journey from deciding to tour, to getting the final show on the road.
Without a doubt one of the best music DVDs I've ever purchased, so recommended without reservation!
super, excellent dvd June 4, 2008 I saw them in Paris 2007 and they where super great, and i must say this is one of the best concert DVD I have ever seen, Phil collins voice is still in good condition, and Mike and Tony are in top form, Daryl and Chester are always great too, And the setlist is wonderful.
Genesis back in Paradise ie on stage! Buy it and wallow in the past! June 1, 2008 This DVD package and the tour itself have been long-awaited by Genesis fans and we are not let down. Growing up with foggy purply stages, somehow captured on VHS during Genesis gigs of the past, this recording captures the technical excellence of sound and vision and is really state of the art. The set is a homecoming, containing most of the 'hit music' of Genesis post-Gabriel and a nice compilation of older songs, including great 'Cage' and section of 'Cinema Show' and 'Firth of Fifth'. Enjoyable is the handy commentary/studio section for each song, which then neatly invites you back to the gig afterwards. Phil seems firmly in charge , with the Charterhouse boys bemusedly tolerating him as he waffles and counts bars. Excellent fun! So, if you're in an analytical frame of mind you can learn hows and whys and listen to Tony pondering semi-tones; if you're not, and the chidlren are upstairs revising for exams, just shut the door, open something suitably refreshing, switch on the DTS, put your chair in the middle of the room and pretend you're still there, wherever you saw the gig. The only excrutiating sections for me are Phil with his execrable Italian but, if it weren't Italian, it would be another language, so , Phil, you're forgiven and your singing voice has lost little of its attack.
STELLAR PERFORMANCE May 31, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I, for one, never thought I'd see Genesis again after they disbanded in the 90's. This reunion was unexpected and an opportunity not to be missed. I was at the Manchester show and thought that, for a bunch of old guys who had not performed together for years, they did remarkably well.
Yes, Phil's voice is not good as it was, but I actually thought of it as a blessing, because the band focussed more on muscial numbers that gave the concert space to breathe; a full-on Phil might have resulted in more 'modern' material, which I'm not so enamoured with.
The only slight down side to this particular concert is that you can tell it was a free show and that many of the attendees may have gone on this basis, rather than being dedicated fans. As a result, the audiance wasn't as up for it as they are at most Genesis gigs. However, that's not the band's fault, but it does slightly take the edge off proceedings and may help explain why other people saw this DVD as boring.
The backstage prep DVD is also interesting.
Well worth investing in, especially at internet prices.
