Great voice, too much pop gloss- strip it down next time! June 5, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Well the title pretty much sums it up. As a serious music fan, this cd was a bit of a disappointment. The people who produced this are somehow connected to Girls Aloud, Sugababes etc, so perhaps I should have taken that as a sign of what to expect. Cilmi clearly has a voice beyond her years, but far too much of this cd is full of sugary ballads and poppy radio-friendly tunes. I saw an acoustic session online with her and it was great, so perhaps they ought to give her her own band and leave her alone rather than manufacture her into some pop starlet. I really do like a couple of tracks (Sweet About Me, Sanctuary, Cigarettes) but hamfisted wailing such as the first track and Terrifying ruin it for me. When you read that this girl was in a Led Zeppelin covers band, you start to wish they'd left her there and recorded that instead of this (largely) slushy pop twaddle. The timing of this cd is also unfortunate; record companies are churning out big voiced white girl "soul singers" (note inverted commas) so fast that it's easy to become jaded. Cilmi (along with numerous others) has been compared to Amy Winehouse, but one thing is becoming increasingly clear- the more Amy copies thrown at us by record companies, the more obvious it becomes that there's no-one that can touch her. Sorry- better luck next time for Gabriella Cilmi!

Yet again, another songtress bringing back soul into their music and if im honest its not do as effectively on this album has it has on others (amy winehouse, duffy) but apart from this, i do like this album and i like the crossover effects of her songs and they work so well.
not my favourite album this year from this kind of artist but definately worth a mention as there is some good songs on the album.
stand out tracks =
sweet about me sanctuary awkward game cigarettes and lies
Baby Baby Baby ! May 27, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a brilliant album. This just gets played over and over. Tremendous delivery and various musical influences. A great mix. This is good. Go on Buy It.Pure music. PS Listen to the new revamped CD single.
great debut album May 22, 2008 I listen to a lot of music so i think i have a good ear for talent,i would say with the exception of maybe 1 or 2 tunes this is a great album, its refreshing, the production is simple but clean and Gabriellas voice seems to change to suit the mood of each track, she may be compared with Amy or maybe Anastacia but i think her voice is much sweeter and easier on the ear,Sanctuary is my favourite song at the moment, buy this album,im sure you wont regret it.
Poptastic...!!! May 14, 2008 This is a very good pop album sung and performed in a manner very alike Sofie Ellis Bextor. There are whole range of voices being used on this recording ranging from the afore mentioned Sofie to Sinead O'Conner. The fact that Gabriella has this range is a true complement to her but, on the whole, the album is all very predictable.
Good party pop.
